little help please

I just recently bought a 1988 4runner with 217,000 miles. It has run good up unitl last week. Sometimes the check engine light will come and and it will start smoking black. If I shut the engine off and turn it back on the light goes away and it runs fine. Today I put injector cleaner in it with no change. I'm startin to think mabe its the o2 sensor. what do ya'll think? O yea its a 22re 4 cylinder.

It is most likely the O2 sensor. The black smoke would indicate an extremely rich A/F mixture.

But there are other sensors that can go bad, and cause the engine to run rich too.

next time you get a CEL have the codes pulled then you will have a better idea as to what the problem is.

I took my o2 sensor out and cleaned it the light went away but is still getting crappy gas mileage. I'm gonna change my plugs and wires today and see how that does.
