The Lexus GX470 is no better than the 4runner with these issues. I lemon lawed my GX for the driveline thump. I also had the creaky seat and problems with the Mark Levinson amp.
It is still hard to swallow with the 4runner for the driveline thump, but it was unacceptable for a 50K luxury Lexus which you pay a premium for.

I just can't understand how bad your Runner is.
My 04 just goes without a problem...knock on wood. I consider I have given it a fairly hard bashing from my offroading adventures and not once has there been any hint of any of these "common" problems.
So far all I've done (other than basic mods for offroading) is service at the dealer every 5000 and self service every 2500.
I feel you might have a genuine lemon that you need to get serious about with Toyota - letters, photos, service records etc - and be persistant in pursuit of getting either a) a new vehicle or b) a fully repaired program at the cost of Toyota.
Is there anyone in your area who is on this forum who could meet up with you and go to the dealer and show the differences between your lemon and ones that don't report any problems?
If your in LA I'd be willing to go in with ya and argue the hell out of them.

You sure have had a bad start with problems buying a junk XREAS system to retro fit, and several attempts at wheel and tire combinations if I recall correctly.

My questions are just as valid as your statement about Toyota not deserving their good reputation......
I'm guessing it's the same clattering many, if not most, of the 4.7L V8's make on cold startup. Either that or your dealer is retarded for diagnosing it as normal.Iowa4Runner said:

lemons happen sometimes certian peoples styles bring out the cars natural defects it no one fault but you cant automatically stereotype a car company , look i had 3 mitsubishi's galant, montero sport and diamante (still own) and i loved them, i'll swear bye mitsu never a problem and i beat my cars bad but im sure almost everyone in this forum will disagree because of a few bad stereotypes anyways u should make sure u give them a poor survey (trust me they care alot about those surveys) and get in touch with the toyota rep in your region and go to another dealership afterwards youll be alright

I'll be scheduled for back surgery in June so I'm going to wait. My 12 has much money in it and makes 180 RWHP. Also I want to see what Suzuki comes out with to counter.

Well... You guessed wrong. It's not the typical noise that engines make on startup, it's a persistent hearty knock that lasts until the engine warms up a bit. I don't recall any other board members reporting the same noises when I posted about it. There are at least a dozen cars I've regularly driven over the course of my life and none of them have done this. My engine oil analysis showed some metals having roughly twice the wear rate as compared to the average Toyota 4.7L V8.
My dealer is retarded, and not just because they seem to slap the word "normal" on every customer concern. What does normal really mean? Even if something is typical, it's not grounds for instant dismissal.
Your questions have no validity because you have zero data on engines like mine that have made it to 300,000 miles. And if my engine does make it that far it might be burning more oil than gas, which would not be normal in my book and not a vehicle any of us would want to own. An engine's usefulness or desirability is determined by more than just the number of miles it goes before failure.
You twisted my words a bit in regard to Toyota's reputation. After experiencing and reading about all the problems the Toyota and Lexus SUVs have had, combined with the fact that some of these problems keep happening year after year, I think it's quite valid to question how Toyota has this stellar reputation. You should take a ride in my co-worker's V6 Camry and watch it hesitate and fall on its face when he's driving through stop and go traffic. "Normal" of course because it's a "low torque transmission". Or maybe talk to the Sequoia owner who had to get his spoiler and a wheel bearing replaced a week after driving it off the lot. I'm not hearing complaints from the Ford, Chevy, and Jeep guys I work with. I'm not saying Ford, Chevy, and Jeep are better, I'm just recounting my experiences as they lend credit to my assertion of Toyota not being as good as they are perceived to be.

I've heard that rumor but doubt it will happen. If it does, that will be my next bike, even though I bleed GREEN! I was also throwing around the idea of a turbo on my 12. A low boost mild 300 hp set-up, plenty power for spankings and reliable.

That is what I did to my 05 4Runner. It had has all kind of problems: Vibration, steering wheel misaligment, broken moonroof track, wind noise, failure power window switches. Steam vapor in one of the turn signal housing, creaking driver seat.....and lastly of the long list is the unforgetable sulfer smell. I dumped this POS after 8 months of the ownership. My 06 4runner is knock-on-wood, not even a single problem after sixth month.
