Loading up stock roof rails with gear...

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had put gear (a few bags, tent, etc) on the roof with no aftermarket roof rack? Only using the stock rails, rope, and maybe a cargo net. Not tons of gear, just a few things.

Also, anyone know the weight max for stock rails? I could only find for 3rd and 4th gen.

If anyone has done this, a description and/or pictures would be great. Thank you

I haven't done it, but I seem to recall reading a 132 lb weight limit somewhere.

The only time I used my stock roof rack was to bring home my new after market rack... as for weight, I believe it is about 150lbs evenly distributed.

Had to load up my stock rack this past weekend due to some shipping issues with my new rack. The stock unit handled my 230lb frame and 70lbs of roof top tent with no issues at all.

I think it's the stock cross bars that are the weak link

I figure the stock side rails can hold their own... but I agree with Neauxla, the cross bars are wastes.

I use the stock crossbars to mount my ski/snowboard rack. It seems to hold the rack and 4 boards just fine.
That being said, I wouldn't want to mount much more than that though. I notice at high speeds when going over dips and bumps that they have a little bit of "give" to them and have almost "bottomed out" on my roof.

The stock cross bars (that run side to side) are rated at 132 pounds. Here is a picture I took off of mine a few weeks ago.

It seems like the stock rails (that run the long way of the truck) are fairly strong.

As noted in the other responses, the stock crossbars are not rated for much. If you end up looking aftermarket, there is some discussion in this thread about the RRO and Gobi racks and how much weight you can put on a system with the aftermarket racks: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/88935-rocky-road-outfitters-roof-rack.html I have the RRO and really like it, lowpro but you can really load it up, and I am adding the Hi Lift jack mount this summer.
