Loads of questions-vibration, exhaust, spacer lifts

Newbie to this forum, but I've been reading for weeks. Here are my stats: '99 T4R limited with 84k miles.

Here are my questions:
1) Since buying my 4runner over a year ago, there has been a vibration present at or around 2500 rpm, felt most under the front floor board. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in, 4WD or 2WD, it's always there. It's just noticeably "rough" at that engine speed, and nowhere else. Any ideas?

2) Been doing some mods--deckplate, new intake, cosmetic stuff (brush guard). Wondering about catback exhaust systems and if Borla is a worthy investment.

3) Sometime down the road I want a little lift. Do spacers make the ride rougher? Does it affect tire wear, i.e, do the tires still sit perfectly perpindicular to the road or do you have to adjust things? I am really ignorant when it comes to this.

1) try getting your tires balanced and alignment checked, if its been like that since you bought it, your tires could be unevenly worn which i believe is called "cupping"

2)the borla of what i heard sounds awesome and with those mods you listed i think its a deffinite winner to complete that.

3) someone else will answer this question better than me but yes it will give you a stiffer ride and for the rest of the question it depends on how much you want to lift.

these are really basic answers and if you need me to elaborate on anything id be happy to and im sure someone else will chime in as well.

I agree, the vibration probably has something to do with alignment or front end problems.

I'm running a Borla on my '90 pick-up for 4 years now and no problems. I really like the sound, and I've heard that the TRD exhausts are basically taken from the Borla design.

If you want a lift, I highly recommend talking with www.toyteclifts.com . I had a great experience dealing with them and they were very helpful with all my questions.

I went with a 3" OME lift from Toytec and added a 3" 4Crawler body lift for some extra clearance. If you want to run larger tires after the lift, you will need 4" back spacing on your wheels I believe.

On question #1: More specifically, it is definitely in the engine or drivetrain. The vibration occurs in any gear (1st thru 4th), at any speed at which the engine is turning 2500 rpm's, OR in neutral (standing still), revving to 2500 rpm. Tires are not involved (replaced since buying). But thanks for the quick replies.I'm wondering about things like timing and fuel injectors?

I have it also, 24-2500rpms, either sitting still or driving, I can feel it on the shift lever. I battled with Toyota when the truck was new and they gave me a 100K warr and told me it was harmonic vibration comming from the exhaust. I doubt it but so far no trouble. For me, it's one of those things that bothered me when the truck was new but it's a slight vibration and I only notice it now when I forget to take the OD off and the truck tacks up on the highway, never notice it on acceleration. Is this about like yours?

Question, You did the deck plate and intake, any improvement in performance or mpg? How loud it it?

That's very similar to mine, except I do notice it during normal acceleration, and I think I notice it less on the highway because by then, I'm already going about 76-78 mph, and I can't really discern the vibration from normal road stuff. I'm not THAT worried about it, it would just be nice to get rid of it. Would different exhaust affect the "harmonic vibration" any?

BTW, I haven't actually put the new intake on, yet, it's been on backorder for about 2 weeks.... The deckplate mod is definitely louder inside the cab at WOT, but no other time. It really is a great sound. I still need to monitor the mpg some more to know for sure, and can't tell a huge difference in performance from the deckplate alone. It feels more "punchy" like some others have said, but is it just the roar? I don't know. No idea how to measure hp gains.

I am pretty sure it is in the exhaust system. The heat shield above my muffler had fallen off and I left it like that for like 3 weeks,, When I finally got around to repairing it I noticed the dam harmonic vibration. Especially evident when at a stop light. If I put the vehicle in neutral it goes away. I am going to check the shield and will let you know what happens.

Man...that would be great. I suspected that it might be harmonic vibration from the exhaust--it's the only thing I haven't addressed. I've done plugs, seafoamed the engine (to clean the injectors, etc,), and MAYBE it minimized it a bit, but not much. Let me know what happens with the shield.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I too am experiencing a vibration, felt more in the seat than the steering wheel... It's around 2100rpm or right around 65mph but when I get up to around 70 it goes away... any ideas?

I don't seem to get any vibration at highway speeds, mine only seems to occur when I am at a stoplight. As mentioned earlier as soon as I put the vehicle in neutral it will stop, and If i turn off the AC compressor (lowering the load on the engine) it will also go away. I plan on trying to find some kind of asbestos insulating material, or something similar to that and putting it between the heat shield and the body. I strongly suspect that it is the shield above the muffler and not the one above the Cat. Evident because I did not have the noise when the heat shield was not bolted to the body :
