Local dealer won't disclose part numbers?

I mean, I guess I can see where they're coming from since you can pretty much beat their price online on pretty much anything, but that's also really unhelpful. The parts guy acted like I was a total annoyance to him and was really rude about it too.

Anyone else run across this?

For those wondering, my situation is that I need a set of radio brackets for a 2004 non-JBL T4R. (My truck came with a cheap Single-DIN in an aftermarket enclosure, so I don't have the original brackets)

I found a vendor online that would be willing to ship me brackets, but he suggested I have my dealer look up the correct part number for my original radio via the VIN so he could check his inventory and send me the right brackets.

Well, now I'm stuck since the dealer won't play ball. Anyone have a part number off your radio? Or even yet, a set of brackets? lol.

So, you're unhappy because they wouldn't take time to give you part numbers to go buy off the internet? Imagine that.

Guessing you're not in a business with internet competition. Why didn't you just buy the brackets from the dealer?

I'm the business that IS the internet competition. :hello:

I don't care for those that gatekeep information, although I do acknowledge their right to do so (as I suggested in my original post, I get the policy). My local Mazda dealer was great about sharing part numbers. Bought quite a few parts off of them too.

Just wish the dealer parts rep had been a little more helpful, is all, instead of basically suggesting I take a long walk off a short pier for asking a simple question.

Sorry, just sharing an unpleasant interaction, but I guess you would have had to be there.

Thanks for the link JetBoy. I'm looking through it. Haven't found non-nav radio parts yet, but I'm still looking.

Was this something you were trying to do over the phone or in person? I always find going in person can yield better results in certain situations.

Unfortunately this was in person. I wonder if it's a training issue honestly. I'd say the guy helping me was in his early 20's or maybe even late teens. When I walked up to the desk, he was looking down watching something on his phone. It took about 20 seconds of silence before he even looked up to see I was standing there. I'm pretty sure I saw an eye-roll before he asked me how he could help.

When he told me that he was not going to provide a part number, I think I just kinda went "Sooo....." waiting for him to suggest anything helpful, but he literally just went back to what was on his phone.

You know, typing this out, I think I remember why I was mad in the first place, and it had way less to do with part-number-hoarding. lol.

I'd say it's more of who you talked to than some dealer policy. I bet if you spoke to someone else, you may have better luck.

That was my thought too. I guess the whole point of this thread was to see if that policy was something anyone else ran up against too. I don't want to ruffle any feathers. If it's boilerplate Toyota policy everywhere I won't pursue it.

So, the last time I did this, I called and asked about the part I was looking for, he told me. I asked the price, he told me then I said "great can you e-mail that to me, like a quote or something?" he said sure, e-mailed me a few minutes later, the part number was on the pdf he sent me. problem solved.

Uh huh ... and now I see where you're coming from. That would have frosted my grapes too. To the point where I've have gone looking for a manager.

Had a more mature person simply explained 'sorry but this is our policy ....' I'd be ok with that, and move on.

They just gave you a real reason to not do business with them. I would let them know that too. A real parts person should be able to research any part you need very efficiently.
Napoleon comes to mind when people try and pull shit like this on me.
