lock question

so I just figured out that my key will unlock but not lock the doors from the outside. It does this with both doors and the hatch. I bought a cheapy key from Lowes to attempt to do a dealer VIN cut, and the VIN cut key doesnt match my current key at all.

Options: spent the cash and buy a whole new set of locks and keys that will contain new ignition, doors, hatch and glovebox, two new oem black rubber coated keys, and the metal valet key. Ebay a whole used set to replace (which I think has been done once already)

400 bucks from my parts guy for everything.

A good locksmith can probably cut a key that works for your current lock cylinders, or can re-key the truck...

Might be a cheaper option than the dealer for all new parts.

The issue is that the key I got with the truck will turn the truck on and off just fine, and will unlock the doors from the outside, but not lock them.

I'm wondering if something is gummed up, broken, or just worn to the point where its done.

Considering it costs 50 bucks just to have the locksmith come open your vehicle for you if you lock your keys in your car, I am wary of having them re-key anything with prices.

What makes you think the key is the issue? I would think if it works to unlock there's no reason why it wouldn't lock too. Do the switches on the door work as they should?

Spray some WD40 in the lock cylinder.
My house front door lock does the same thing sometimes.

You wouldn't be asking a locksmith to come to you - you would take the parts from your truck to a locksmith.

An experience locksmith might also be able to cut a good key by looking at your bad key and tweaking it a bit.

Or you can try some graphite-based lube in the locks to see if that helps.

As far as taking the parts to a locksmith, there is only one locksmith here in town that actually has a shop. Plus my key is worn as hell, and has a twist in it. I'm going to spray one lock with graphite lube, see if that doesnt help. I'm wondering if something in the cylinders or the door isnt messed up.

I would try the lube too. The tumblers are either in or out- so if it unlocks it should lock too- it's just turning the opposite direction in the cylinder. If the key doesn't turn, there is a pretty good chance it's simply corroded. It is an old truck and most folks probably use the door button to lock when getting out rather than the key. I know that's what I do.

If it DOES turn, I would open up the door and make sure everything is connected properly. Perhaps you've had a rod come off. Not unheard of.

try the glove box lock. wonder if you got a copy of a valet key, which has worn enough over the years to where it's having trouble in the door/hatch keys. sounds like you have power locks, how about a cheap aftermarket keyless remote?

To remove the locks is not a big job at all. Takes about 15 minutes for driver and passenger door, and maybe 30 for the hatch.

When I bought my truck the key I had worked in the passenger door amd ignition. I bought a full set of locks from a parts truck for &30, had the locksmith cut 2 new keys ( from my VIN ) - $20, and had the 3 new locks keyed to my key ( $60 ).

$110, 3 new locks, 2 new keys. Maybe 2 hours of work total.

A VIN cut key did not operate the locks on the door OR the ignition. I tried that this morning. That was the first step. The VIN cut key did not in any way match my current key for the truck, so my guess is that someone at some point in time switched out locksets or something.

I will see if it will lock/unlock the glove box.

I dont know if that is it. If you turn the key twice to unlock it, all the doors unlock like they should. Using the power locks, all the doors lock and unlock like they should.

update: key locks and unlocks glovebox and hatch. just not the doors. new key wont lock/unlock passenger side at all. frustrating to say the least.
