I've got a set of Tokico Trekmaster shocks on my '99 4Runner. The front have OME 881 coils along with a Toytec 3/4" spacer. I've noticed my 4Runner has been riding poorly as in stiff. Today I was out working on something unrelated when I bounced on the front bumper.
When I put my weight on the bumper the driver side cycles through the travel and the whole truck has a bit of a wiggle (as in the shock and coil are working properly). The passenger side is as hard as a rock and the only thing that moves is the tire. I had lowered the pressure last week in an effort to smooth out the ride so now there is a bit more bulge. When I press on the bumper the bulge is the only thing that moves.
So my question is what I can do the the shock shy of replacing it? I don't want to pull it and the coil for fear I won't be able to get it back together and keep my truck drivable.
Has anyone else had this happen? I have a buddy who's locked up but I think it had a click or similar noise but nevertheless it started working again before the other side shock blew.
I have heard that the Trekmaster shocks were no longer to be used with lifted applications. The shock used to be spec'd with the Sonoran Steel 7 lift but has been since replaced with the Bilstein 5100's for the Tundra as it uses a Tundra coil for the lift.
If I go the Bilstein route which model should I get if I've got the OME 881 coils? I'd imagine the 881 coils and factory coils have a similar seat and coil diameter where as the Tundra Bilsteins need an adapter for the coil and shock to work.
