According to the numbers on Wikipedia, it's slightly wider, taller, and several hundred pounds heavier than a 4th.
The size of the 5th gen is the biggest reason I wouldn't get one, even if I could afford it.

Yeah I have to say that I find the 5th gen to be very bland and uninspired looking. It just seems to be a big box without a lot of design character

I have to admit that when the 4th gen came out, I absolutely hated it. The 5th gen is quite different from the 4th, but that fine. It's actually starting to grow on me. I can't wait until they do a mid-cycle refresh.
Someone mentioned how much it has grown. That's fair as ALL cars/trucks have grown over the years. i personally don't think there's a ton of difference btwn (size-wise) 4th and 5th gen. What I think stands out is the RAV4. The 1gen is very tiny. The newer ones are tons bigger.

Looked quickly at 5th Gens when I bought my 08 a little over a year ago. I could have gotten one with a few less options than my limited for about the same price, but there is something about them I don't care for. For one, I hate the 20" rims, they just look awful on that platform. And when you are following one, the tire are sucked in so far it looks like you could just run up and tip it over, it's hideous. I know a set of spacers would cure that, but still.
I like the Trails though.

Not my cup of tea but theyre starting to grow on me. The GF is looking at new cars and ive been pushing for a used 5th gen. I followed a limited to work today and noticed that it had the rear window buttons on the plastic piece above the license plate. Thats a b!tchin feature!

I test drove one when they fist came out, and was very close to buying it but was dissapointed in the lack of engine concidering I knew it would be lifted. Luckily I found a great deal on an 05 V8 and to this day I'm super happy I never bought the 5th gen... plus the way the lights stick out looks odd to me, but seems like more vehicles are doing that now.
This was exactly how I felt. I was seeing someone years back, in 2005, you had a 4th gen and I had a 2nd gen and I thought her truck was the ugliest thing. How things change. I love my 4th gen.
The 5th is an attempt to return the the higher look of thr 1st/2nd/3rd. The modern nanny devices that they put on these things help prevent all the roll over issues that plagued the 90's SVU (including the 4runner) that caused them to move them down and squat.
So...that doesn't bother me. The sheer size does a bit as does some of the design on it. The 4runner was always supposed to be a smaller SUV for good performance on and OFF road... but that is changing as American's asses get bigger.

I like the 5th Gens fine. I like almost all 4Runners. Not a fan of the 2nd Gens though.
We're considering getting the wife one. Unlike some I only prefer the 20's that come on the LTD's. I think the SR5 wheels look fugly on the truck. Clearly I like 20's I also think straight on from the front and rear something about the lines on it don't strike a cord with me, but I'm a big fan of the profile and the squared off looks.
The Trail Editions are nice too. I like FJ, Taco's and Tundra's as well. As long as it's a Toyota truck, I'm good!

I agree, especially if I see Trail edition…
If mid cycle updates will bring Trail with 4.6 V8 and 6 speed trany I would be looking for one.

I'm glad they grew a little over the years. I test drove a 2nd gen 4runner when they first came out. Way too small. My knees hit the dash with the seats all the way back. Bought a Pathfinder instead. It had a lot more leg room. My 05 is a perfect size for me. Don't want one bigger..nor do I need one bigger.
