Looking at a 4th Gen, have a couple questions.

So a couple weeks ago my Subaru got totaled :rip:. I'm seriously considering a 4th gen so my 1st gen has a friend. There are a few in my area that I like, (most V6, I'll get a V8 if I find one I like, not a big deal). The one I like the most is 2008 with just rolled over to 100K, SR5, 3rd row for $16.5K. I haven't had time to look at it in person yet, just online photos. It doesn't have the factory roof rack. I can't find anything about what options are, I would like to do a full basket, or even a roof top tent at some point but I don't know if I can if it doesn't already have the factory rack. There are others with similar miles for comparable prices with roof racks. I like the color of this one, and it has remote start which I would like when it's 10F when I'm going to work. If I do the OME lift can I fit 33"s? I thought there would be info on that one but I can't seem to find it. Anything odd I should look for on the 2008 SR5 before I go talk to the dealer?

Roof rack might be something to just go peek at. Drive it never hurt anything. Maybe more wrong. I have seen countless second party sales of remote starts and issue costing money. I want remote start but I wouldn't buy one without paperwork. I'm weird

you can get a rack pretty easily either oem or aftermarket, its a pretty good price depending on how it looks/drives/feels in person

Don't look back

I purchased an 08 two years ago. As I was leaving the dealer, I spoke out loud to my self, "why haven't I done this sooner"? You won't look back. V8 is nice to have. Other than all time 4 wheel drive and a gas sucker, it is my favorite rig yet.
Doesn't sound like you searched very hard so I will throw you a freebie before all of the online tuff-guys start bagging on you for not using the search.

My only suggestion on any 4Runner is doing a complete function check on your 4 wheel drive system. E-Locker particularly.
'08 is my favorite year. Hard to go wrong. Be sure to post pics of what you beach.

Well now I feel kinda dumb seeing as that's a sticky. Sounds like the remote start might be more trouble than the convenience is worth. Hopefully have time to take a look at it after work tomorrow. Pictures show it in pretty good condition but that doesn't mean much. This one is a V6 which I understand is a timing chain. As for cycling the 4wd system; I test drove one about a month ago, V8, switched to 4low, it just kept beeping at me and the 4wd light was flashing. I tried switching between between all gears including park but it didn't seem to go. Is there some bizarre trick or was this system just faulty? My 1st gen is manual everything so this auto 4wd is pretty new to me.

When I bought my '06 a month ago, it was initially sluggish shifting between 4hi and 4lo, but a few cycles cleared that up. Judging by its condition underneath, I doubt it was ever off the pavement and 4lo may never have been engaged. A lot of 4runners spend their life that way - darn shame, I know. Kind of like never letting your dog run off leash.

Technique to switch it is to put transmission in neutral, foot on brake, and then activate the control. That's the procedure in the owners manual. It takes a few seconds, so be patient.

I've never seen a 4th gen T4R with a naked roof, but if you don't have factory side rails you will prob need to go with Yakima control towers or the equivalent. If you have factory side rails you can go with a Yakima Rail grab or equivalent. These systems might not give you the load capacity to camp on top as the max weight for these setups is around 100 lb's.

You should be in nuetral when switching between 4wdh and 4wdl. However, if this does not work and lights are flashing the 4wd actuator might be shot. I noticed a leak in mine, and unfortunately the shift rod had become loose and wallowed out the O ring on the actuator. I replaced 4wd actuator and "voila" no flashing lights and shifting between 4wdh and 4wdl was smooth like butter. This was an expensive repair, but sadly necessary as it was a bigger problem than a worn out seal.

I'm not a mechanic, but looks like quite a bit of rust IMHO. My 2004 with 112,000 has a lot less (practically none if any) rust than that and I would be asking similar price if I was selling.

I'd guess you can find better 4th gens out there if you kept looking.

Look for a southern lexus gx470. I just picked one up for $17k with 97k miles on it.
