Looking at a Gen-4 with 264K miles...

i would buy it, just not for towards 5 grand. also, i could have bought a v8 and agree they are very cool. but i made decision to go with the v6 on purpose. i didnt want AWD full time and dont dislike the v6 engine at all. the v8 is def sweet though, my dad had it in a tundra and i remember really enjoying driving it.

I'd try to get it for $4K but I'd still get it. Those V8s are awesome, low-revving, lang-lasting motors, and the AWD is really good. If I got another Toyota SUV, it would have to be the Lexus with the 4.6, I suppose...unless I can find that unicorn 4.7 again with low mileage! Those will go 400K with decent maintenance.

Sorry to hear that bud. I personally would have jumped on it if it checked the boxes like I mentioned.

Gone are the days of shroud negotiating on the V8's as less and less are becoming available, there is always someone behind you that will be willing to pay what you won't. Hopefully something comes up in the near future for you and now that you have the knowledge of what to look for.

Unless you’re doing a lot of towing, don’t rule out a clean 06-09 V6 either... they’re great and have their own set of pluses too.

OK, found one, it's now pending for me to look at; hopefully it checks out. SR5 240K mi 4.7 v8; clean; pacific blue; water pump and timing done at 190; new exhaust.
It does have a check engine light for the o2 sensor, I'll need to research the costs or fixes for that.

I haven't seen it, so I don't know if it's rusty or anything.

I'll see it Saturday. (I'm pretty dang excited)

Now... I know I'm going to mod this thing (I'm a previous jeep owner after all) what would you do right off the bat (assuming it doesn't need anything done to it)? say, total mods = less than $300 for now.

I paid 3k for my 04 v8 with 261k miles, with a number of things needed.

TB, which I just finished last night.

xreas r shot so once it gets a bit warmer ill be swapping in taco suspension, tranny flush, and other fluids. I also had the cracked windshield replaced for $220 and will be leaving a crack in the bumper alon.

I had found a comparable one minus sunroof for almost 8K, also needed TB job.

It runs great, lots of fun

If it doesn't need any maintenance work done and you are able to start modding, I'd look into the suspension first and start with that based on how you are going to use the vehicle.

SR5 shouldn't have the XREAS to worry about, that's a good thing. To keep things on the cheap, you could do the Tacoma suspension swap with FJ rear springs such as I have done. Keeps cost down, improves the ride on and off road dramatically and gives you a better idea of what you might want to do moving forward.

If you're will to spend a little more, then look at a 5100 suspension or Dobinson. Dobinson is probably my next step for my 4R.

I personally wouldn't let 03-05 V6s scare. Just perform a leak/combustion test before buying.

There's been at least a few 06-07s that have also had HG issues.

True. For me, since I don’t tow, no timing belt and not having awd was the selling point of the V6. The updated bumper covers, led tail lights, projector headlights, I just like the look better. I’d drive an 03-05 if I found the right one at the right price too..

I guess a chain is maybe more involved... I'll do it when the time comes.

From what I've read (whatever that's worth) lol.. the chain usually will stretch first instead of outright failure, usually throws a code with it.

I've also read, and seen, people not keeping up with oil changes getting chains stretching on them a lot sooner than people who do the regular maintenance.

not trying to get on a soapbox or anything here...

Looking forward to hearing how the truck is when you get to see it. I would be dying having to wait that long, hope all goes well.

That's a good point on the v6! If this falls though, I'll be less picky.

Yea, it's killing me waiting this long... and I keep reading stuff; worried that I won't like it as much as the 06 because of the VVTi (extra 30ish hp) in the 06 and the extra little things (projector headlights, leather, etc) that are included in the 06 Limited, and that dark blue color, man!
But, holding out for another one, may not be an option of mine! I mean, with less than a $4600 budget, they aren't exactly plentiful unless I go gen3.

I like the style of the gen4 best, it's a good mix of old and new, so IDK.

See, this is why I can't wait, I'll talk myself out of something! lol

It's all about the rust and fluids on this one, then I'll hand it over to a mechanic for inspection; he has a decent maintenance history, unlike the 06.

Went back and looked at your previous post about this one, no mention of the year. I guessing they're OEM, and it's an 03... I think that's the only year they came with the non body matched flares. I'm not 100% sure on that tho.

thats OEM. they had the non painted as mentioned above, and theres little notches in those fender flares too.

Just looking at the photo I wondering if it's a 2WD and not a 4WD because all I see for the badges on the door is SR5 and no 4WD, I know the 4th GENS have both badges for a 4WD but I'm not sure for early 2003s.

DO you have any photos showing the dash and the 4WD control switch?
