Looking at a "needs engine work" first gen

1987 Toyota 4 Runner

As my title states, I found this on CL. According to the owner, "I think it needs a rebuild". I'm ok with doing an engine swap but what else needs/should be replaced while in there? I hate to spend a little more than a grand on a truck that I can't test the trans/4x4. Also, I saw a link on here to a guy in PNW that rebuilds yota engines, who was that?

What do you guys think? The truck is 3+ hours away (not an easy 3 hours either). I found another one in my state that came from S Carolina but they want $5500 w/ extra parts. I did not want to spend more than $4000 for a truck BUT if its amazing, I could.

It's your money. I would spend up to $1000 on a truck that was very very clean inside and out even if the drivetrain was missing.

But it would have to be damned clean. Like car show clean.

Thanks. I've never bought a vehicle that modified by the PO, always makes me a little nervous. I'll have see if I can find someone local to check out the truck in DE.

Personally...I like it...even for $1400. Did the owner say if it runs at all?

And to me...and this is just ME...but $5500 for that red Yoter with 120k on a rebuild, and what appears to be bone-stock...seems a bit high.

if it where me i like the one for $1400.00.....with the price diff. from the other one that leaves you a lot of money left over, and when your done with the rebuild on the engine you know what you have and still will have some money left over..

The grey one looks nice, but lifted like that you may have trouble passing the safety inspection.

Inspection wouldn't be too much of an issue, got that covered. I showed my wife a few pics of some first gen 4rnrs and she's less than thrilled. She wants me to get another Land Cruiser, either another fj60 or an fj80. We shall see what happens
