Looking at an 2002 Sport 4wd

I'm looking at picking up an 2002 sport 4wd with 85000 miles on it. Asking price is 13,500.

Wondering what specifically i should look at or if thats a fair price. Also I'm guessing mid to high teens MPG wise? Any know problems with these trucks?!?!?

I'm hoping itll be a bullet proof setup I can drive for many years to come.

I know this question probably gets asked a ton and I'll be searching but I'm a little short on time so I'm hoping to find out as much info as possible.

for the 2002 clean retail (from a dealer) is $10,750.... sounds a little steep to me.

As for price, I can't really say since I don't really know American pricing. Thats about right for a Canadian car, but then again, our cars cost more from the factory so thats gotta be factored in. With that mileage, there isn't much to watch out for, the trucks are pretty damn solid.

Basically if it's got a good service history then nothing should break for a long long time.

No idea where you're located, but I'd check the undercarriage and see how rusty it is, or lack thereof. With Toyota's, rust will kill the car before the vehicle itself breaks down.

Other than that, make sure the 4wd system works smoothly at all sorts of speeds, make sure to shift it into 4lo while doing 30km+, a crappy transfer case won't be as smooth.

oh and as for MPG, it depends a lot on your driving style/commute. I get low teens, but I drive all city stop and go traffic and I don't like to merge like I'm 85 so I tend to be a bit heavy on the throttle in some situations. Not like I drive crazy, but I don't baby the throttle all the time, though I do try and keep it below 2500. On the highway I definitely see more reasonable fuel consumption.

I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt here and assume Avarice did not mean to attempt a 4lo shift at 30 kph, which I assure you will not be smooth at all. If you want to push the button and engage 4hi at 30 kph or mph that's fine, but to go into 4lo you must be stopped and in Neutral. Try to proof read things, if the OP was really naive he might do exactly what is suggested, imagine what you would do if someone was test driving your Runner and jammed it into 4lo at 30 kph with no warning, and then said "No thanks, it's not smooth".

Our stock '97 4x4 5-speed with 176k miles is averaging 18.5mpg - only owned since October ('10) - paid 6700.

I personally think that is overpriced, but if that was in this area, they would be asking even more than that. There's a place not too far outside of Seattle that specializes in low mile 4Runners. If they had one with those specs, they would be asking a minimum of 15k and more likely 16k. No negotiation.

as for pricing, I've been looking everywhere for six months, still look everyday (auto trader, ebay, cl)
you'll see lots of members mention prices of less than $10k for '01-'02 but I just have not seen good one's at that price ie great condition less than 100K miles, more like $12-16K
I paid $10.5K from a dealer in TX, costs $750 to ship
I thought that I overpaid after hearing all these "deals" here, but now I think 11=13K for a great truck is a good price, that said I've already dropped $4k in upgrades and may do the whole SC thing for another $4k, but I love my rig and what else could I get for $20K that would be this sweet!

2 1/2 years ago, I bought my '02 sport 4wd @86k miles for $13,200. I would say $11,500 by now. Every time a new body style come out, older ones lose some value. Also depends on rust, general condition, and other factors.

Before my lift/tires, I was regularly getting 19-20 mpg with 50:50 city/ highway. Strict highway at 70 mph was 22mpg,
I now get 18mpg with that run.

With 85k miles, you will need to do your timing belt/ water pump service (every 90k). That will be 500-600 bucks. The radiator should be replaced every 10 years, that will be $150+ labor. Might want to change the plugs too, but that will be $30.

Besides those maintenance items and oil changes, this vehicle will be smooth sailing to 400k miles, easy.

Here in Colorado clean 4Runners command top dollar. Walk in and play hard ball and they'll tell you to hit the road. ;-)

6 months ago I was at the Toyota dealer in Colorado Springs buying a car for my kid and the sales manager offered me $14.5K for my very clean 2002 Sport Edition w/95K miles on it.

I said no thanks and he asked what it would take. I said more than you'd be willing to pay. But he was making an honest unsolicited offer so you know if he was going to pay me $14.5K for it, he was certain he was going to be able to turn it over for a decent profit. Dealers don't pay the bills losing money.

We talked a bit and he told me that finding really nice 3rd gens is difficult (because most of us that own them don't want to sell them) and when he does get them, they are some of his hottest sellers on the lot.

So... Point I am making is, when I bought my one owner 2002 in 2007 I paid a premium price because I wanted a vehicle that was taken care of the way I take care of them had I bought it new. I didn't want a new 4Runner.

If you find a 2002 (or whatever year you like) that is clean and has been loved, snag it. They are still a bargain even at high KBB retail value IMO.

I'll own mine until the wheels fall off, which I think is going to be a very, very long time based on prior 4Runner experience.
