Correction - the one I have isn't folding - I see this one can fold up when it's empty. Curt sells the one that doesn't fold also - that's the one I have.

I bought the 22x59 Rola Cargo Carrier from etrailer.com and love it. I also bought the Rola rainproof cargo bag and LED light kit. The carrier is heavy but stout and will hold 600 lbs. etrailer also beat Amazon pricing. So far I've hauled heavy stuff like bagged mulch, rock, and loaded coolers w/o a problem. No mileage change detected and no issues with exhaust heat either. Recommended....

I've got this carrier too. It's nice but it's pretty heavy and a little hard to hook up by yourself. I think it says that the shipping weight is north of 70#....it feels like it too.

That's mine! I've used it on both of our cars and it folds. Less expensive than most of the others. I just exchanged the galvanized fasteners with stainless steel ones, I'm not a fan of rust. I love mine, you'll be happy with it. Good luck!

I have the Curt rooftop carrier and it's a great piece for the price. Looking at a hitch carrier in addition since our new puppy will soon need more room in the truck.
I'm in the same boat as the original question. I have to haul gas out to my ranch for the genny and don't want to store gas cans inside the vehicle for obvious reasons (I could haul them on a trailer, but that would require alot more work). Is it a better idea to store cans in a roof mounted cargo box or in the rear hitch carrier? I'd assume the roof box given that fender benders won't cause them to explode and the only real worry is roll over.

I don't carry them low.
I like my gas cans above impact height for an accident. Whatever that looks like for you.

I received the exact same one this weekend and finally got a chance to install it. Do yours have a gap where the 2 sides insert and connect in the middle in the middle of the back and front plates?
One side insert fits all the way in while the other side leaves a gap. I tried to push the two sides together hoping it would close the gap but it didn't. Did any of you guys have that problem?

Tight Fit?
Does anyone have experience with either the Ultra Tow Aluminum or Pro Series 6502 StrongArm hitch cargo carriers on their 5th Gen? The Ultra Tow may also be known as the Maxxhaul 70108 (The images seem identical besides the name plate)
I'm specifically wondering:
1. How tightly they fit in the hitch receiver. I'd like something that is a tight fit and avoid the tilting or bouncing around of that extra weight due to a gap. Some of the MaxxHaul reviews indicate some play in the hitch receiver.
2. If there are issues with drag going up reasonable inclines while loaded (not hard core off roading). The StrongArm is designed with a rise shank to mitigate this issue. I don't know if the Ultra Tow does.
Other brand suggestion are welcome as well.

I have the Pro Series 6502 StrongArm. The rise shank was one of the reasons I went with this one. No issues and only recall one time it scraped hard on a trail. I use one of these to eliminate any rattling or movement.

Also, I usually haul a cooler or Plano Sportsman Trunk, maybe with some other light stuff strapped on top and the trunk still opens without issue. Just something to keep in mind with the rise shank and what you're carrying.

Works great for family vacations. Can raise/lower the rear hatch with carrier installed and loaded. Dog (75-lb GSD) can easily get in/out of her 42" wire kennel with side door in the cargo area.

Been looking into smaller versions of the hitch-mounted cargo box (so that the overall length of the vehicle is increased by only a foot or so instead of two feet or more). This Curt Trailer Hitch Mounted Step looks like a serviceable platform to attach to the rear hitch receiver with a receiver lock, and to bolt a small cargo box to:

Not so easy to find a small, sturdy, lockable cargo box. Possibly adapt something from this company that makes bear-resistant boxes:
