Looking for a Christmas miracle...

Good Morning T4R Family!

First and foremost let me just say that I love this place! I've mostly been a lurker around here, but the depth of knowledge, information, and sweet a** rigs in unbelievable. I'm no stranger to the Toyota world having come from an '89 pickup that NEVER let me down (until I smashed it anyway) but the 4R is a whole new world, and I have never seen a group of people so eager to help one another, feels like a family. Especially compared to some of the other forums out there...Keep up the good work boys and girls!! And a big thank you to everyone that has helped directly or indirectly, I only hope that one day I may return the favour.

So that being said, after blowing a few sentences of sunshine up your arses it's time to get down to business. I am embarking on a road trip at the end of this month, specifically Vancouver, BC to Panama and back in my '94 Runner (2ND GEN FTW!!!), my problem is this: I had local guy (friend of a friend...first mistake) that was going to fab me a rear bumper with a swingout for my spare, this beautiful specimen of a human being has now decided to flake out and completely disappear. I have had no word for weeks, no updates, no pictures, no nothing. With a leave date of Dec 28/29 coming up quick I am now in a pickle. My 33 will not fit in the stock spare location, and I really really really don't want to have my spare taking up that much space in my roof basket, or just have it up there period especially for 4-5 months.

So I am putting a call out to my 4R family. We will be traveling straight down the west coast into the Baja peninsula, and taking the ferry to the main lands from La Paz. If you are someone who has, knows someone who has any sort of a rear bumper with a swingout...plate...tube...hybrid...at this point I am not picky. Hell, if you've seen a rig in the bush rotting away with a rear swingout I could pull off and bolt onto mine I'd be interested!! We'll be traveling the I-5 but I am more than willing to deviate a little bit if there is anyone there that would be willing to help or knows someone that could. If you are someone that has one and needs a little extra cash and an excuse to buy a fancy new one, I would love to help spread the Christmas cheer and put some cold hard cash in your pocket!

Thats it. Thats my rant. Thats my Christmas wish. I apologize for the novel, I get carried away sometimes...

If you know, see, heard ANYTHING send them my way!!

Thanks in advance from a forever grateful Canuckistanian!!

Have you thought about finding a receiver hitch mounted spare tire carrier? I've seen some threads about them on here before, but I can't seem to find it.

Or maybe you can get creative and try to rig a hitch mounted bike carrier to hold a tire?

Sorry I'm not much help, but good luck and have a safe journey! :)

That might work except for the fact I don't have a hitch on my rig, or even a factory bumper for that matter. The hitch was the first thing to go as the winner who installed it mounted it about 4" below the bumper. First ditch I went through I got hung up on it. Removed it that day on the trail, second ditch I went through I caught the corner of the bumper and mangled it. Pulled it that day on the trail. It was a big ditch. Didn't bother with another as I knew I wanted a swing away at some point. I'd rather have it on the roof then have to remove the hitch mount carrier every time I need in the back.

Thanks tho, appreciate it.

just an idea, but if you have no rear bumper and no receiver hitch, you could cut the last several inches of you exhaust off and put a turn down on it, then a 33 will fit in the factory location.

Another fantastic idea except...haha...I used the free space after removing my spare to build a custom on-board air system and that's where I mounted my compressor... :noidea:

Thanks tho!

Sorry man out of ideas, good luck on your quest!

How about a front hitch receiver?

warn-front-receiver.jpg

Warn Industries - Mounting Systems: Multi-Mount Winch Mounting System

Looks like they have a part for the 94 4R:
Warn Industries - WARN Front Receiver Application Chart

From there you can use a spare tire hitch receiver as Eddie suggested. You'll probably need to get a lower mount as to not obstruct that much of your view. I don't know about laws, but being in California, I'm sure the local LE will gladly give you a ticket for that. Just some food for thought.

seems like roof is the only way to go. im sure you can still strap stuff on top of the tire. i know a couple of fab shops, but to whip up something in a day will be hard.

the owner of Fat Fabrications in east Texas is taking his family in a Pinzgauer on a long trip (I believe out west) and put out feelers seeking work he could do along the way to help fund his trip; maybe you could coordinate something with him...?

Whenevr you use this product make sure to tell the tech working on your tires when it comes time to take them off.. that stuff is very combustable.

4xinnovations makes a sweet bumper. I have one on my 2nd gen and thing is damn solid, may take a good amount of fab time though

Thanks for ideas guys, appreciate it. For now I'm just hoping that somewhere out there there's a bumper with a swing out that Santa has put my name on. If nothing turns up I'll make due with the spare on the roof, not ideal but totally 100% better than nothing. Thanks for keeping your eyes and ears open!!

I can't help out with the bumper, but I do wish you good luck on your trip! And I think I speak for us all when I say--we want pictures of this epic road trip!

I'll keep my eyes open around here and if something pops up, I can snag it for you and maybe you can grab it on your way down.

Thank you! Don't worry there'll be plenty of pictures my friend, I'll start a thread when we hit the road...

You should come wheeling around Portland/Mt. Hood on your way down. :)

I would love too, but the first couple days are going to be long ones. We're trying to make it to San Fran or maybe SoCal - depending on the day we leave - for New Years. Definitely a trip if like to make in the future though.

Thank you! At this point that's all I'm looking for!!

I know it's not ideal, but what about a set of wide bars and a rocket box? Wit my setup I know I could get my box on my bars as well as a 35" tire. I don't know how it would work logistically, but I'd totally let you borrow my box if you got the bars.
