Looking for CB radio

Im a noob and have never delt with a CB radio, and have a few questions for the experts. I have a 99 limited btw. anyways I was looking at the Cobra 19, I saw someone in the forum had it where the ash tray was (can someone elaborate if you have one there that it fit properly and such). Also, I want a PA system so what is needed for that, an amplifier I think? I will be paying an electronic shop for the install since I have no clue what Im doing. The Cobra 19 got good reviews and is cheap, I just want one to talk to truckers and use the PA system for fun, so I want a very loud PA system. Lastly, Ive always wanted a cop siren, so how can I incorporate one into a CB radio, is there one thats both? I dont think the cobra 19 has that. Thanks guys!

I am in the process of installing a Cobra 19 DX IV right now in my 99 SR5. The install has been super easy. I found the process for taking apart the dash in the Tutorial sticky for changing the AC bulbs. Then I followed the instructions in 4-Ripcord's build thread to install the radio. I wouldn't pay a shop to install it because it really is easy to do. As far as the PA system I have no idea, sorry. Hope this helps.
 
I second the cobra 19. Its the perfect size for mounting in the ashtray location and its an entirely doable install. The 19dxiv does have a PA but to my knowledge, there are no compact cb's that offer a siren of any sort, you'll just have to make the noise with your mouth lol.
 
x3 on the Cobra 19. The DXIV has the PA option. Sirens are on a completely different type of system that usually incorporates the light bar.

Do the install yourself, it IS very easy, just 2 wires, search on here or use google, theres LOTS of DIY.. As far as the Cobra, those are good radios..

I do have to ask,,, WHY, do you want a cop siren ??? Im not even sure its legal.
 
I just put one in my 99 too, very easy install. I used a Uniden somethingorother, I have Cobra's in my other rigs. They all work good.
 
don't be afraid to dig into your dash to install the cb yourself. it's pretty easy.
there are plenty of write ups showing how to mount it in the ash tray location.
just don't forget the 90 antenna connector.
also, skip the cop siren...you could be arrested for impersonation.
 
be sure to get a SWR meter, i got mine from ebay for $8 shipped.
i just tuned mine yesterday and its 10 times better. (installed a fire stick antenna last week.)

im running a cobra wx 18 st
Cobra 18WX ST 40-channel CB radio

its much larger than the 19 (fits in the radio slot if u have a single din radio)
but i have mine infront of the passenger seat. the thing i like about this one but dont like is
1. i has NOAA weather radio so anywhere i go i can hear weather conditions while driving. i drive cross country so its good to hear weather even tho i most likely dont have internet service.
2. the thing i dont like about this one is that there is no PA.

dont have anyone install your radio. its super easy!

Ok maybe ill try to do it myself, I have never done any sort of wiring, theres always a first time for everything. Anyways can someone explain the antenna part? I assume I need one and how? like how do i wire the radio into the antenna and where to buy or mount an antenna? thanks!
 
Also where does the sound come from? the CB radio itself or does it need to we wired into the car speakers? I currently have an aftermarket double din radio

You definitely have to have an antenna. Never operate a CB without one or you'll be buying a new one. There are several choices of antennas & where to mount. Magnet based antennas are easy to mount on the roof. Fiberglass antennas such as Firestik are popular. Steel whip antennas are also an option.

The Cobra 19 has an internal speaker.
 
Thanks! can anyone show me where to buy an antenna mount that attaches to the left tail light? Also, what antenna is recomended and if your installed your antenna on the read left light, where did you wire the antenna through to get to the cb radio in the dash? thanks

If the pic is of your set-up I assume you know what your talking about! I'm also very interested to know more about CB's. Installing one wouldnt be my problem. I just dont know anything about them really. I have put several in my own trucks, but just as a plug and play install. Normally only getting ok results.. Good enough for a trail run but not much more. I never tuned a ant. And stuck it wherever it fits.
I guess I would ask if you could do a CB's for idiots kind of write up... Something simple for people of low CB knowledge to help us achieve the basics of a install that will let us get more out of it?
Personally I was looking at a Uniden 520.. But it seems the ant. is just as impotant as the CB. (As I've researched it, all the threads seem to go from very simple to HOLY CRAP! Faster than you can get ***** slapped by a friend!) so I just wan't a set-up that should work from meeting people at the trailhead to staying in contact over the whole trail in mtn valley type trails.. Thanks if you know that stuff and can help! Who knows, maybe you can make some money publishing a "cb for dummies" book! Lol

I have a mount for sale that attaches under the left rear light.

I used a 4' Wilson flex antenna. Good for trail riding because its not too tall and won't break off as easy with low lying limbs.

I routed the cable between the top of the bumper and body and into the vent in the lower rear quarter panel behind the bumper. I then routed it along the driver's side under the trim panels to the dash.

That set up is the police radio and light/siren control box in my patrol car. I'm no expert. I've learned what little I know about CBs from Internet searches. Check out this site for good info.

the PA is just about the funnest thing you can do with a CB set. My CB set has a built in port for the mic. you just really need to wire the speaker to the battery and CB set and your good. (I can go get some pics and write detailed instructions for you if you would like)

Oh and side note: MAKE SURE YOU TURN THE DAMN THING OFF WHEN YOUR DONE.
