Looking for DIY 1GRFE Tranny Drain and Refill

Is there any diy for 2003 2wd, 1grfe tranny drain and refill my truck has 174k and I don’t want to do a tranny flush. The manual calls for Toyota Type IV fluid how many qts should I purchase and where do I refill the new fluid, from the tranny dip stick? Thanks

You're going to need 3.2 quartz, so you'll need 4 but I would get 5 and keep the extra on hand which isn't a bad idea.

Yes you refill with a funnel via the dipstick tube.

I drain and fill at home…. But the problem I see with drain and fill is you don’t get all of it, and you basically dilute it back into better health.

I bought a case (12 quarts) of trans fluid and did 3 drain and fills within a short amount of time (1-2 days). The fluid looks A LOT better, but it’s not a prefect method as its costly in its own way since you are dumping good fluid as your dilute it back to a healthier state.

If I had to do it again, I would try and do a flush though one of the lines.

Filling from the dip stick area was also slow and tedious.

I have some photos but I don't remember if this was old vs new, or what it looked like after about 3 drain / fills. I think it might be old vs new, with the final result being a little darker than the new.

Yep....do the drain/fill via the cooler lines. This isn't a "flush" but simply uses the transmission's own pump to remove the fluid from the pan and torque converter and pull in fresh fluid.

There are a few different threads but it's pretty easy. You'll need about 4' of tubing, a hose barb, a couple of clamps. Ideally, a gallon gear-oil or other jug that has a fitting to use as a reservoir helps out a lot.

I was able to wedge in my "reservoir" right in front of the battery and connect everything up. Then you run the "drain" line into a catch pan or big jug of your choice. Fill up the reservoir with clean fluid and turn the engine over for maybe 20 seconds. This is enough to pump out the old, dirty fluid and take in a couple of quarts of the new clean stuff.

Repeat this process a few times until you've dumped out all of the old. I believe the entire system holds about 12 quarts. I did this on my T4R and the wife's Sienna van. Worked like a champ.
