I ditched the ko2's for duratracs for snow and ice performance. For me basing my tire choice was honestly looking at my usage, and deciding what the no fail category was for me. That means having the confidence that I can stop or maneuver around an obstacle on the road when it's -10 and there's a few inches of snow on the ground.

CA-RJ's post does an excellent job showing that a tire doesn't need to be super aggressive to do some serious wheeling.

I noticed the Duratracs get good snow ratings on Tirerack and similar in price to the K02s it looks like. I'll have to look into them more.

I like a little more aggressive look, but I can't seem to stop buying Michelin tires. I have the LTX MS2 now and they have 90k miles on them. Based on remaining tread I have about another 15k before I consider replacing them. They have always performed great for me in snow and ice. 8-10" of snow and I have never had to use the differential lock. I would consider something else if I did a bunch of offroading, but I am mainly onroad daily driving and for that nothing can touch the Michelin's imo.

265/70/17 KO2s here. Amazing tire. They are quieter than I thought. Feel solid on and off road. Look incredible. I notice a slight hit in mpg and acceleration though but to be expected.

Absolutely love my General Grabber AT2s! (256/70R17 E load rated) Bit cheaper than the KO2s and very good in all conditions (even snowflake rated/studdable for snowy/icy conditions)

Ran Cooper AT3's now for 35,000 miles. Tread wear is great, it was also great in the snow when we got it. Where it really excelled however was rain. Never even had to search for traction. What lead me to it was the price point as well, quite cheap compared to KO2's.

i'll second the cooper discoverer AT3s. i found them on amazon for $119 apiece, my local america's tire matched that price AND i got a $70 rebate.

What Size Cooper AT3? Just priced 275-70's at DT for $180 Each. KO2's were $220 each.

Of course those are cheaper lol.

I read a great write-up on a/t tires last night. They tested the ko2, Grabber at2, Nitto Grappler, Cooper AT3 etc. After all of their extensive testing, the Coopers got the highest rating overall. I'll see if I can find the article.

Google falken wildpeak at then google falken wildpeak at3w.

At3w is one of the hottest tires out right now. I had the previous falken and it was terrible.

Its a snow/winter rating, tire doesn't "require" the use of chains if needed. I think the BFG's have it now too, has to pass certain traction standards to get it


The severe service winter tire designation looks like a peaked mountain with a snowflake in the middle. When you see a tire with the mountain snowflake pictograph on the sidewall, you know it meets specific snow traction performance requirements set by the Rubber Association of Canada.

I have tested many tires over the years. On my Grand Cherokee, Cherokee and now 4runner (on the 3rd set on 4runner) by far the best overall is the Nitto Ridge Grappled. Love them on the street, snow, mud, rocks. They are great.
