Looking For Info On These Trails

Did a quick trip to the Eastern Sierra last week. The wife liked it so much she wants to go back this weekend for three days (not nearly as long as our week last week, but better than nothing).

I'm looking to try out some new trails. I have the Backcountry Adventures book which has had some good ones and pretty awesome directions. There are a few in there I'd like to try, but I cannot find ANYTHING on these trails whatsoever. Not sure if names are different now or if people just have not done them.

The trails I'm interested in are:

Sierra View Trail
The Narrows Trail
Coyote Creek Trail


The other ones I'm not so concerned about, but two of those are rated a 4, the other is a 3. The book seems to be a bit off IMO with ratings, as Silver Canyon was rated a 3, but then so was Deer Mountain Trail (which should have been a one IMO).

Has anyone who has done these trails know much about them? I know Coyote Creek runs off of the Flat Trail, but I'm interested in just doing the creek section.

Sierra View apparently gets tight in some spots, but the time to do it according to the book isn't awful, so I'm thinking it's rating is more due to the shelf road with little passing areas.

Regardless if anyone has done these and has information I'd appreciate it. Seems like the internet is pretty useless shockingly enough. Or I'm just horrible at searching.

I have the Massey book too... as well as a couple of others and would agree with you... Some of the ratings can be off. I attribute it to the age of the content and the ever changing conditions of nature. But, I do appreciate the books for the ideas and starting points.

If you havent checked out www.trails.com, they sometimes have reviews and helpful info (but some content costs $). You could also try, 4x4TrailMaps ... but I dont think the trails you're looking for are on there (but might be nice for future).

I also highly recommend checking the FS for road closures and other info (https://www.fs.fed.us/r5/webmaps/StormDamage2017/). As you likely know, there was a lot of damage from this past winter ...

I have the Massey book too... as well as a couple of others and would agree with you... Some of the ratings can be off. I attribute it to the age of the content and the ever changing conditions of nature. But, I do appreciate the books for the ideas and starting points.

If you havent checked out www.trails.com, they sometimes have reviews and helpful info (but some content costs $). You could also try, 4x4TrailMaps ... but I dont think the trails you're looking for are on there (but might be nice for future).

Definitely true about nature changing. One of the roads I was supposed to take in the Buttermilk area was literally gone. Road has a good 2ft drop for about 20-30ft. Funny thing is, nothing about the road being closed or anything at the beginning of the trail like I'm used to (after looking at that closure map sure enough it's listed there as impassable).

I've checked the trails one as well and they don't even show up on there. I'm guessing it's not a popular route. It's supposed to have some nice views though and more Bighorn Sheep. Guess I'll just check it out and see what it's like up that way. It doesn't appear to be on the closure map from what I can tell.

They are great books though. Lot of detailed information. Not sure what you spent, I recently bought mine used. $50, which is more than what they were new, but I'd spend double that. In fact I think I did for the Southern California one. Some wanted $200.

Yeah - sometimes all the fun is going out and checking it out for yourself. But I definitely agree - I find a lot of value in the various guide books I have... Not sure what I paid for the big Massey one... like $30 or what ever it was selling for 10 yrs ago when I bought it... sadly it sat in a box for like 7 of those yrs when I was between 4x4's. But, its out now and definitely one of my go to resources for ideas of places to visit.
