Looking for my 2nd 4Runner.

Hello,
Nice site here, I figured I could get some valuable info on a car I'm looking at.

So the car im looking at is a 1997 tan SR5 2wd. The truck only has 70k miles on it right now. The person is asking 5k for the vehicle which seems high especially with the following issues:
1. AC compressor is shot, the belt is removed and I assume the unit has seized.

2. The front drivers side brake appears to be missing chunks of metal! when hit the brakes the car pulls very strongly to the right (big surprise there!)

3. Tires dont have much life left in them and have flat spots from sitting.

What do you think of a vehicle this age with this low mileage? The truck runs very strong, but the other issues worry me. what causes a brake rotor to fall apart? I am sure it would be fairly simple to throw a new caliper, pads and rotor on there though.

Is the AC compressor something I can replace at home or do I need to take it in. I usually do my own car/boat repairs, but have never worked on an AC.


I have a 96 sr5 4wd at home in the bahamas, but need to upgrade the 96 corolla because I have a second child on the way and need more space and a safer vehicle to use about a week out of the month in the USA.

my 96 has been a great truck and does everything i need it to do, it only has an issue with not letting go of the key when i shut it off!


So it comes down to the following questions:
Should I walk or make an offer?
What should I offer considering the above issues?

Seems like it's overpriced. The issues that you mention indicate a high level of maitenance neglect. I'd be surprised if these are the only issues that are going to need attention.

Also, keep in mind that AC repair is not cheap. Best case scenario you're looking at a new compressor/belt/drier/refrigirant ~ $650 + labor, worst case scenario you're also replacing the AC condenser and other ac lines.

I am pretty sure the odometer is correct. The owner is older and has a difficult time getting around and works at home. She is also the only owner.

I found a new compressor/clutch assembly online for $135 new. But I have never dealt with the website before.

I am a bit leery about buying something that already has known issues. but money is tight, and i like the reliability, price, and space that the 3rd gen provides. I get the feeling you guys think I should walk away from this one.
