Looking for opinions on ebay feedback.

Over a little more than a decade, I've bought maybe 50 items on ebay. I don't think I've sold anything. In other words, I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse of the ebay community.

Anyway, I'm considering leaving negative feedback for an auction I won but in which the item had already been sold. The only reason I haven't left the feedback yet is I'm not sure if my lack of ebay familiarity is making me miss some context about how things are normally done.

It was an inexpensive item ($60), but it was an item I spent at a couple of hours searching for and deciding which one (of a list of duplicate items) was likely in good enough condition to meet my needs. Only one stood out. Then I "won" it and was pretty stoked.

The seller apologized and asked that I accept the transaction cancellation. If the person was a noob or infrequent user like myself, I'd just forget about it, but, while not a power seller, this seller is plenty experienced and currently very active. Because of that, I think it should result in negative feedback.

Waddya think.

Been a while since I've done much ebay.
I hear that ebay mostly takes the side of the buyer, but that is based on the deal going through.

But I'd let it go since you are not out any money. Don't invest any more time and energy on that particular seller.

I wouldn't leave negative feedback, I would leave neutral and explain what happened in the comment section. The seller could have said they sold it because it didn't sell for what they wanted it to. This is a common tactic loophole that eBay allows and can't do anything about. All you can do is see if they relist it again. I've been on eBay for a while and negative feedback can be detrimental although it is not calculated into your percentage after a year.

Ebay has very specific rules that sellers must follow. This would fall into the seller non-performance category.


The bad news is there's nothing that can be done to force the seller to follow through. But people like this should be flagged. It not only alerts other buyers but can help document a pattern if it happens again.

I agree with BOFA on this. I recently left negative feedback for a seller whose items I bought using "buy now" which is a price the seller sets and is typically more than he might get with open bidding. He accepted my PayPal and after a few days returned my money w/o comment. When pressed he finally told me he didn't make the profit he wanted. People should be made aware of this type of seller.

To clarify, there was a minimum bid which I exceeded so, yeah, the seller either backed out or had already sold it elsewhere.

The "24 hour letter-in-the-drawer rule" is what I call it. It's also what I have taught my kids too. My daughter (graduates this May with her BSN) recently was ready to fire off a nasty email to a professor about schedule changes. I only learned of this after the fact but she told me she left it in her outbox til the next day, read it and deleted it because it was "petty" she said. Those rules are still applicable!

I've been on ebay since '06 but only recently have gotten into the selling side of things. I'd by no means consider myself a power seller either and probably never will be, but instead just someone cleaning house and making some extra coin.

I've had some minor problems with transactions, both my fault as well as the buyers but have always been able to resolve them to everyone's satisfaction. Sorry to hear of your bad experience, it seems like more and more sellers and buyers just don't care anymore and are ruining the whole ebay experience.

FWIW, ebay is now definitely a buyer's market. There is currently no way to leave a buyer negative feedback whatsoever.
