Looking to Buy a 4Runner Again

I'd check the big thread in the 6th gen forum. The GX has been announced, the Land Cruiser announcement is happening soon-ish, and 4Runner announcement is this winter.
Budget-wise it will likely be (in most to least) GX - LC - 4R

I'm a big 5th gen fan. I've bought six and currently have four in the family. I want my family in sturdy, dependable, comfortable transportation.
I just bought the sixth off the boat. It will be here in another week or two. The added safety sensors for 2023 sold me (I'm old and don't think or react as well as a younger man). That said, the rumors of a four cylinder turbo pushed me over the edge. I live in the desert where heat is huge. Heat is a turbochargers greatest enemy. Nuff' said. Others will (legitimately) argue that the next gen will be more refined and that the drive train will provide better value. I don't need that. I don't need more performance. I don't need better gas mileage. I drive 5000 miles a year to the store, medical appointments and an occasional restaurant. Every couple of months, I also drive 100 miles to the airport to take a cruise. The 5th Gen 4Runner is perfect for this. :thumb3:

Not much has changed.
Trail = TRD OR now. And new "Trail" is an SR5 with appearance package. There's a lot more options for sunroof or not in most trims. Sport = limited front clip and Xreas/awd, but with a hood scoop and SR5 interior.
Slight updates inside. All have safety sensors. And IIRC all of them now have radar cruise control and auto headlights!! Keyless entry.
Plus side of radar cruise is that it will downshift before you even get to a hill - it can see it in the distance and down shift before you even get there!
MPG estimates are about 10% lower than pre-2017? Not sure what happened to re-estimate 2mpg lower.
Most everything else is the same. Still rock solid, decent power but not easily given up. Still needs a 6 or 10 AT and is sticking with the needle bearing diff. And still in very short supply - possibly worse than ever. It's the same old 4Runner you know and love with all the quirks that have been there since 2010 except the auto headlights.
Traded mine for a Tundra. Much better for towing, but otherwise I miss the 4R. I'll probably buy another one in a few years or the new LC depending on what it is - and how much it costs.

My 2023 ORP does not have auto headlights (or auto climate control or tap to turn signal, all three of which are laughable omissions on a $50k vehicle, but whatever). It does have a heated steering wheel standard though.

Almost my exact situation except I plan on putting 8-10,000 miles on mine since the wife and I will take a couple of road trips per year that will eat up 3-5K. That's our substitution for cruising.

Well, then you have a choice between the Off-Road and the Off-Road Premium.
That narrows the field quite a bit.

Welcome back 1E! If you haven't already, you might want to check out the few threads about the high cost of KDSS repair. Most have to do with leaks and the costs to repair and recharge the system. Some folks have just removed the system all together. I don't know if this is mainly on newer vehicles or not.
Another issue is the front sensor for the Toyota safety sense system. Adding a lift or attaching an aftermarket bumper and or winch have been issues for some. Apparently errors can result from moving this sensor or changing its height.

I picked up a 2023 ORP 5 weeks ago. I did not realize came with a heated steering wheel until reading your post yesterday! Lol. Yep, sure enough does. Cool.

My personal view in looking for a 2023 model is get one without the MTM. Multi terrain monitor - the front and side cameras, after trying out ones with and without, I found just having the backup camera is cleaner and less distracting. Plus I personally did not like the way the front camera sticks out the front - looks terrible IMO. So glad I found a dealer who could get me a 2023 TRD Off road premium without that $850 option (premium plus package = MTM camera system). According to my dealer about 35-40% of 2023 models are being made without the premium
Plus MTM system. Many want so he was able to dealer trade for one without as was loading on boat in Japan basically. Was worth the 6 week wait for me to get one without.

I actually love MTM for parking and stopping at lights. I have mine set to activate automatically on the display at low speed, and it's like having a handy birds-eye view of all the points I need to line up with. It centers me in parking spaces perfectly on the first try, and the front cam allows me to get right up to parking bumpers and bollards without hitting them. Had it on my Tacoma as well. As far as offroading, I find it pretty much useless there, as the potato-level resolution doesn't really allow much distinguishing of micro-terrain.

Go with KDSS. I traded my 2011 Trail in with KDSS issues for a 2020 ORP w/ KDSS and purchased $0 deductible extended warranty for 7 years at the end of 3 year standard warranty. KDSS issues will be addressed by Toyota now.
Disabled auto dim feature as they go back to high beam too soon on cars behind the lead car.
The fake leather is far superior to the storm cloth seats on the trail. Especially if you have a German Shepherd along for the ride.:reddance:

Funny how people are different. I had an order in for an ORP between August '22 and March '23. It had to be cancelled because the dealership couldn't get an ORP allocated that DID have the MTM - the one feature I insisted on. A factor in me moving up to the Limited was that the panoramic camera (a similar camera system) is a standard feature on this trim level.
