Looking to Buy, Need Advice

First off...New member to this forum. Previously a member of YotaTech, but I feel like this site has a wider audience for the 5th Gen. I currently own a 2002 Sport, and my wife and I are looking to upgrade. This will be her daily car to haul the kids around, while I commute in something a little more fuel efficient.

I've been reading here and other forums, and have narrowed down my selection to a new SR5 with the Premium package. I did my online dealer research and ran across a local dealer with both a 2012 and 2013 on the lot. I inquired about the 2012, and it is not a demo (only 6 miles on the clock).

Price wise, we are looking at about $400 more for the 2013 vs the 2012. $38200 vs $35737 -- before all dest, tags, fees, etc.

My question is I feel like the 2012 could be had for lower, so I wanted to open it for opinion. Looking for a realistic number, and arguments to back it up.

Thanks for the help!

If possible I find it best to have the dealers compete with each other on the price. If there is another "reputable" dealer in your area that you would not mind doing business, take that price to them and ask them to beat it. Ping, pong, until you have the best price and they won't go any lower.

Try to keep it strictly online/phone at first, cause the moment you step foot in the dealer they will try to get you in one as soon as you can.

Obviously if they are big competitors this could work in your favor.

Either way that 2012 should go for a good bit less if you push it, just to get it off their lot.

Sorry couldn't be more specific with prices, however I'm looking at a 2013 Trail myself right now and this is just what has worked best for me.

Good luck!

Went and talked with the dealer last night and test drove the truck. He gave me the standard "its still new and basically the same as a 2013, so we may be able to come off a little, but you know..." Kinda what I expected.

The numbers worked out as...34739 + 845 (freight) + 219 (dealer prep) + 200 (process) + tax & tag. The base price before any fees is their Internet price.

I'll be working up an offer shortly to send over.

Unless these two 4Rs are identical except for MY, where does the wife come down on the choices?

That's the biggie, Bro. Don't overlook...

I know you are in Baltimore but I paid $32.9 for my SR5 with premium/3rdrow just for reference... I think they are a little high especially on the 2012

Unless they will come down a major amount of money, I'd go with the 2013 -- your depreciation will be lower and the truck doesn't have any lot rot.

When it comes time to sell - having a newer (1 model year) vehicle, might more than make up for the $400. Also, 4Runners built after Oct 2012 now qualify as IIHS 'Top Safety' picks.

No doubt on the happy wife. She is good with either. I also agree that unless they are willing to deal on the '12, I'll continue to shop for the '13. I probably didnt mention it before, but we are in no rush to something. If the deal is right for either MY, then we'll jump.

In any case....thanks for the feedback

Funny business sometimes...If the dealer ordered the 2012 (not reallocated from the zone) he might have more into it than the 2013. Until they're motivated to move it, the price may not be too appealing.

It sounds like you're doing your homework, best of luck!

Offered 34k plus tax/tag. Rejected becuase we are too far apart. Said he could do a few hundred off Internet price, but in reality that only puts us at best 1k less than a 2013 on his lot and others. We'll put that on the back burner as we look elsewhere.

That sounds like a good idea as he's not moving much on the 12. I bought my 12 last June for 36k out the door and got 3M bra, running boards, tint, wheel locks and mud flaps. No 3rd row but have the convenience package with sunroof, backup camera, and upgraded sport seats.

In the end, my local dealer wasn't willing to come off the price more than $500, and then low balled me on the trade in. I ended up purchasing a 2013 at another dealer for what I felt was a fair price and I receive $700 over the other dealer for my trade in. It did come with a few extras (running boards, roof rails, etc) that weren't on our must have list, but all-in-all we got what we wanted.

We take ownership on Monday,so I'll post some pics then. Sad to see the 02 Sport go, but we are really excited about the 2013. Thanks for everyone's opinion, and I look forward to participating in more discussions.

Price 2012 vs 2013

First of all have them throw out the dealer prep crap. That is just additional dealer profit. They are required to present you with a fully operational vehicle and a full tank of gas, which is required by the manufacter of the product. I personally never pay processing. If they won't take it off I tell them don't process it, just sign the manufacturers documents to me and I will drop by the local DMV in the next couple of weeks. All else is required is a call to your insurance agent to give him the new vehicle data. They may say they can not do it that way. Just say thanks and head for the door. I cannot say all states, but I have lived in a few different states and I always do my own and they jumped their fee so high.
