Looking to Purchase 04 V8 4Runner

Just wanted to pop my head in here for some advice. I am looking at a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition V8 4wd that has 140,000 miles on it. One owner has been meticulously maintained by a Toyota Dealer. The guy wants 11k for it, what kind of things should I look out for on a 4R with this kind of mileage? Or should I look for something a little lower on the miles?

I just bought an 04 v8 4x4 limited with 136,000 miles on it for $12,800 and love it. The v8 is so smooth. I wouldn't worry about the miles if the motor was well maintained. Only thing is the v8 needs to have it's timing belt change every 90k. Even though my belt looked ok to me at 136k I changed it anyways along with the water pump since I was already in there. Come to find out, the water pump was starting to leak through the weep hole anyways.

Check the Iridium spark plugs were replaced on schedule (not too pricey if they need doing however). Watch for brakes - the one engineering weak point on the 4Runner from what I can tell - the front calipers in particular have a tendency to seize, which usually means new pads and rotors as well as calipers. I am about to have a front caliper job done for the second time at around 87000 miles (145,000km) - at least the first time was just within warranty.

The one other thing I would look for is rust on the rear taligate - in particular where the plastic moulding with the Toyota logo on it over the trunk release meets the metal and in the area around the window seal especially at the top, where water and dirt can collect just under the seal. I caught it on my mine just within the 6 year corrosion warranty - you will likely be out of time for that if there is a problem.

You might find you feel a slight drive train clunk when you come to a stop when test driving. If you do, it's likely just a case of it needing the prop shaft lubricating and tightening.

Other than that, it's a great truck - I'm still glad I have mine 6 and half years on - engine as mentioned above is bullet proof.

I'd also make sure the x-reas isn't leaking at the top of the shocks, they can go around this time. That being said, I bought my '03 LTD w/118k two years ago for $11.5

Bought my 04 Limited V8 6 months ago with 113000 on the odo and couldn't be happier. Lady that owned it before me babied it. She had all maintenance done at the recommended intervals and kept it garaged. Got it for $13,800. No kids, smoking, or pets. 6 year old new truck.:trophy:

We ALWAYS pay more for 4Runners in Colorado! My 04 V8 SE was $19k a year and a half ago. And it was the cheapest V8 I could find in Denver with Decent miles..Only 50k.


Sounds like a great price. I say go for it.

one thing to note: the v8's saw a boost in power in 2005 from (someone correct me here if i'm wrong) vvti, which is variable valve timing. It boosted the output from 230hp to 270hp in '05 and then went down to 260 from '06 on. So if this matters to you, you may want to look into finding an '05. I certainly noticed a difference in the new v8 versus the old.

Ditto with 04 V-8

105K on my 04 V-8. Timing belt done @ 93K ,was in good shape but WP was weeping ,good change! Plus all new coolant in system. Bullet proof, Change transmission fluid @ 75K and rear end with synthetic @ same time. Only problem was with brakes, Live on large hill in So.Cal and up and down everyday was tough on brakes. Front three times,rears once. Peplaced the rotors to get them tyo work better.

Yes, I've found that to be the case over the years. I had to fly to Denver to get mine, but man was it worth it. I absolutely love the Lexus-borrowed V8. It's great to have that power at hand on the byways of Colorado. Off-road it's low-end helps the 'Runner outperform almost any stock vehicle out there. 4Runner driver forever, .

the '05 V8 and the '06 V8 actually have the exact same amount of HP and torque. The only thing that changed between '05 and '06 was the SAE standards used to measure the HP and torque. As a result of the new SAE standards the '06 V8 ratings dropped a bit on paper but the engine was exactly the same as '05.

from '05 on the V8 is more powerful than the '03-'04 version.
