Don't worry -- you'll be back. Hopefully you only make a $30K-$40K mistake once.
I'll never own another Chrysler vehicle. Past reliability is called predicted reliability in my book. Name one manufacture that has turned crap into gold?
Resale value tells all. When you go to sell the JGC and buy a 4R (which you should have done in the first place), you will look back and realize what happened. In 4 years, you couldn't begin to buy a 2010 4Runner for what your 2011 Grand Cherokee will be worth...

I went back to look at the Grand Cherokee again and then realized it does not have the suspension that lifts(this is the only one they have in stock). That is something I really wanted but that is even more expensive(overland 49K). This is to close to Lexus gx460 territory.I just retired and I am taking a 6000 mile trip around the United States. I decided to just take my 03 4runner instead of buying new right now. My 03 only has 48k miles and is very well maintained so it should make the trip fine. I will rethink all of this when I get back in one month.

I will not be going anywhere even if I buy a new vehicle. My 03 is here to stay. I intend to make it more off road worthy (sliders, skid plates, maybe better suspension etc). I already have a lift and BFG all terrains and it does pretty darn good off road in the desert. I love this vehicle to much to get rid of it. I want to do more of the trails I do in my Wrangler becuase it is really getting old, 1991. My new vehicle will be our main transportation and after it is 6 or 7 years old turn it into a more serious off roader.
especially when you consider with IRS alignment can be knocked out. Ask any BMW owner how expensive THAT can be after it make cones our of your tires

I just got rid of a Jeep Commander. It was a horrible vehicle. I'll never own another Jeep.
My brother has a Commander and he loves it. I don't think he's ever had any problems with it.

One of my good friends has one too. He's never had any trouble either.
Mine however, was a train wreck. It was virtually in for warranty work weeks after we bought it. Leaking windshield, air conditioning problems, transmission issues and electrical problems. Also, the door gaskets were coming off on the driver's door and rear hatch. This thing was 3 years old!!! It only had 40k miles on it.
We liked the styling. But we were unhappy with the interior space, especially in the cargo area. As far as handling, people think the 4runner is a little soft. The Commander's rear suspension was overly soft, while the front was properly set. The steering was also better than the 4runner. But that's the only thing I can say good about it.

I went to a Jeep dealer and he basically told me not to buy the Commander! I felt like I was in the twilight zone, he did not try to push me into any of the others. He was honest with me, told me some of the issues they have had and said they they will stop making them soon. I still took a look at one and test drove it, was not impressed. I guess some salesman are honest!
He must have been quitting that day. Either that, or he's just brain dead and not working as a Jeep salesman anymore.

We had a Commander rental in Hawaii (Kauai) a couple of years ago. The thing stalled when coasting downhill... pretty sad, especially for a vehicle w/ less than 5K.
Test drove a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee this weekend... doesn't come close to the 5th Gen 4Runner. Whereas it is a leap forward for the brand, it felt cheap and not as planted/solid as the 4Runner.
In February while on St. John (USVI), we had a 2010 Wrangler Unlimited for ten days - given the choice, I'd go w/ the Wrangler at least it knows its place in the market. The JGC seemed more like an urban wannabe.

I'm sure that's it. I've had other Jeeps over the years. I had a '77 Wagoneer in high school. I loved it. But, it had the old 360, which was a boat anchor with pistons. I chased electrical gremlins the entire time I owned it. Once I even had to drive it from our camp in Ocala all the way back to Orlando with the center diff locked because it refused to disengage from 4wd...while pulling our bass boat! That was a hell of a squirrely ride!
I've also owned two Cherokees (the old boxy one). I enjoyed them too. But I had electrical problems, window leaks, etc., just like the Commander.
If I'm going to invest over $35k in an SUV, I expect it to have the quality and reliability commensurate with that investment.
The Commander was my wife's vehicle. I traded her Commander for a Nissan Altima for her a few weeks ago. I traded my Nissan Titan for the 4runner. The Titan, while rough around the edges was great. I just needed something a little smaller, but still with off road capability. I only tow a flats boat. So, I'm well within my "activity zone" as far as vehicle capability goes with the 4runner.
Love it so far!

I saw this thread a while ago, and I am still wondering why the owner of a '03 4Runner would post this on this forum - and more specifically in the 5th gen forum. Seems like he just being a "tool" that probably does not even have the $ to buy a Cherokee - much less a new 4Runner.
I have found my 5th Gen 4R to be a fantastic vehicle and think it will be pretty much impossible for Chrysler to meet this standard in its first year of a new design and a new engine - even though it uses a revised Mercedes chassis. Their track record does not bode well for this purchaser.
I guess my point is that I would not post on the Chrysler Forum that I was buying a 4Runner, unless I was just wanting to be a jerk.

Seriously? Think about what you're saying....the guy is a 4Runner owner. His particular 4Runner is now seven years old and he's thinking of replacing it with another SUV. So naturally, he's going to look at a new 4Runner as a possible choice for his next vehicle. And when it turns out that he doesn't like the new 4Runner, he looked for alternatives.
His alternative is a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. And he posted a thread about that. How is that being a jerk? And why does it seem to upset you?
Are you considering adding another SUV to your 5th gen? Or are you ready to replace it already?
