Tomarrows the day that I get my 4runner back from a good friends exhaust shop. He's started chopping up the stock system today and found a few problems. The Cat had been gutted... Most of the joints had JB weld sealing up holes.

Any way.
He's removing the crossove and dropping down under the trans to Y into the pipe just befor the o2, so that it reads the same.

Up next on my list of projects is to remove the upper intake manifold and build a custom plenum that will bolt in its place to the stock lower.
Something like the attaced pic.

After all that is mocked-up, I'm going to pull out the engine and rebuild it from the bottom up.

I would definitely recommend against the intake plans you mentioned--you're going to lose precious low-end power at the expense of gaining nearly-unusable power on the high end. While a cold air intake can help with power, the factory manifold design is typically very well suited to making the right kind of power for that engine. An intake like you propose is all about high-end racing engine power, like the old tunnel-ram intakes on V8's.

The intake in the pic was just the basic idea. (it was ment for a turbo)
The one I hope to build will have much longer runners just for the low end power. I need to figure out a way to be able to adjust the runner length with out having to cut and weld it each time after I test drive it.

There are programs, and books you can buy to help design your
systems. Keep in mind of the added cylinder pressures to be added.
Higher cylinder pressures will lower the margin of errors(timing,fuel,
temps) before damage is incurred.

Are you also going to do a stand alone engine management system?

I did not mean I was going turbo... Just using a modified intake desing for one. I'd love to boost a v6, but it would be a bit of a waste IMO to do it on a 4runner that is not ment to rev that high.
 
Turbos can make power up high, but they are torque multipliers(see maxidyne characteristic), that make power based on load using wasted heat and sound energy. If youre proposing making an intake that style, without boost, and planning it for low rpm gains, don't waste your time, or supplies.

Good point. I've not done anything to the intake yet, so I'm just trying to make a basic plan for it.
I was unable to swing by the shop to pick up my 4runner last night. It will haft to be today after I get off work.
 
This will give you some idea about those factory manifolds and the work that goes into them--I have a book on building high performance Hondas, and they tested several different aftermarket manifolds, hoping to see significant gains, and found that the best performing design was the factory model with a mild cleaning up of the inside surfaces. None of the aftermarket designs offered any significant improvement over the heavily-researched and engineered factory model. The Japanese do their work on these VERY well, with few exceptions (we'll ignore that 2nd Gen exhaust crossover brain-fart here--LOL). Cooling the air is one thing, but messing with the flow path is a whole different animal, one which the factories did quite well--approach any changes with great caution.
 
More bad news. :boom:

Just got a call from the shop. he was unable to remove the locking nuts the hold the crossover to the exhaust manifolds. He said if I can get them off, he would not charge the normal rate to fab up the rest of the down pipe.
Guess I can still bake some bread on my dash for a few more days.
 
I was just hanging out on my creeper under the 4runner for the last hour.

Needless to say one of the 6 nuts is rounded off. Dose any one know what there made of?
They look like copper, but I'm not sure.
