Even though I could have some connections and could have gotten all the nasty work of replacing the belts and water pump in addition to an oil change done for around $200-$300.....
But my dad made me go to the stealership and do it all there.

Well, I was talking to the service rep about doing my transmission fluid drain and fill myself (it's not hard) and he told me just to drain about 4 quarts and add 4 quarts of new fluid...

Is it just me or is he crazy? Some insight pleaseeeee. I was planning on just doing a regular drain and fill.

Drain and fill will barely get out 4 quarts. A Total Fluid Exchange is what I recommend and will get 16 quarts of fresh fluid in there.

I used to work at jiffy lube and they do total fluid exchanges for 120 for penzoil and we offered amsoil at our shop. the amsoil was 165.

how does a total fluid exchange differ from a complete transmission flush? everyone always says not to flush because it could leave your transmission not working. are there any side effects to a total fluid exchange?

How many miles do you have on your 4Runner? The service manager told me they won't do a "full transmission service" on one with over 100k miles ....like any vehicle, it can ruin the transmission if it hasn't been serviced regularly and then suddenly has a complete service. Instead, they do a "drain and fill" .....another method is to get a siphon, and from the filler tube, remove 1/3 and add 1/3 fresh, then after 1000 miles, remove a 1/3 and add 1/3 fresh, and then again after 1000 miles - that will put fresh fluid in the tranny gradually without 'shocking' it....
