OK guys. I posted this over on TTORA as well, but don't think their Early Tech section gets a lot of traffic. I hope you don't mind me posting this here.
I think I may know the issue, but need some help locating it.
My truck is an '89 2wd with 22re and (I believe) A43D auto trans. It shifts flawlessly 1-3, but suddenly stopped going into overdrive on Monday.
About ten years ago, the same thing happened and I took into the shop for diagnosis. After testing, they said there was an external piece (solenoid maybe?) that had gone bad. It was ordered, replaced and the trans worked perfectly until this week. I'm thinking its the same issue. The shop guy said it was external and exposed to all forms of weather and grit and had a tendency to go bad due to this. My problem is I tried to get underneath without a lift or jack and locate the thing-but since I don't really know what or where I'm looking for-I didn't see anything that jumped out at me as the piece. The guy told me if it goes bad again, I should be able to replace it myself and save some money, and that's what I intend to do
Any help on the correct part name and location would be fantastic! I want to get this fixed ASAP as this is my daily driver (still pulls 29mpg). Though driving the 2000 Limited 4Runner and its creature comforts is sure nice! But I'm trying to keep the miles off of it (only 112K so far).
