Lost trailer hitch key

Hi guys,

I bought a 2006 4Runner last month and when I brought it home I realized that the trailer hitch key is missing and the previous owner doesn't have it.

The hitch is off the car but the lock is engaged so I can't put it back on the car until the lock is disengaged.

I called Toyota and they said they don't have any data-bases to be able to create a duplicate key.

Any ideas of where I go from here?

If it were me I would just cut the pin off the hitch and get a new pin.

Cutting it off is probably the cheapest route unless you have a good locksmith around.

Depending on the style, a 5lb sledge or angle grinder should remove it in a few seconds.

For what it is worth I picked up one of those locks that you can match to your ignition key and it works great. After you cut it off you could replace it with one of those and feel like you got an upgrade.

This. A little bit of elbow grease and presto lock is now unlocked!

Ours was on the vehicle and the we had the key, except it was so rusted it wouldn't turn once we could work the key in. A reciprocating saw with metal cutting blade had it off in less than 2 min.

Angle grinder. Will take longer to get out and put away than the actual cutting.

Just cut it off and get a new one. Sawzall will make quick work of it.

I had a similar problem. I borrowed a friend's truck to pick up a boat I purchased 5 hrs away in Tampa. He forgot to give me the key for the lock. Went to Home Depot, bought a cordless angle grinder and battery, charged it at restaurant at lunch, took about 30 seconds to cut off 1/2 inch thick stainless Masterlock hitch lock. I just bought him a new one and brought the boat home. That is one of the resins I ended up getting the V8 4 Runner so I wouldn't need to borrow a truck to pull my boat.

At the dealership, we'd just pop it off with a pry bar. Most took less than 10 sec. If not a grinder will do it, just more work.
