Low pitch rotational hum that varies with speed

4th generation (2008) 4Runner Sport V6 @ 52,000 miles

New onset low pitch rotational hum that varies with speed; pitch is constant.
Occurs only while moving in all gears including N; R not tested.
Occurs in 2L and 4H; 4L not tested.
Slight yet noticeable vibration in steering wheel, esp at 15-30 mph.
Unaffected by braking.
Hum disappears during cornering, esp when sharp to right.

Visual inspection of steering linkage, suspension, CV boots, etc by dealer service dept. Service recommended tire replacement (tread at 3/32").

New tires, high-speed balanced, and 4 wheel thrust alignment done today at tire center

Hum still present.

Plan to return to dealer for diagnosis.

CV joints? wheel bearings? Any ideas?

Probably front wheel bearing. Insist the dealer tech use chassis ears to diagnose so they get it right the first time. Wheel bearings can be difficult to diag correctly without them.

Wheel bearing - I had the exact same symptoms and having the right front wheel bearing replaced solved everything. Good luck.

Oh, and the hum went away when cornering to the right in my case as well because it was the right front bearing that was at fault. Turning to the right takes weight/stress off the right front suspension components.

Hum in 2006 4runner V8 LTD

2 weeks ago I started having the exact same symptoms...hum in front end, slight steering wheel vibration and relief from it when turning right.

I'll take it in to have the wheel bearings inspected/replaced.

Anyone have an idea of what I should pay to have 1 or both front wheel bearings replaced?

Any reason the dealer should handle this (66k miles and out of warranty) ?

Yup, wheel bearing most likely.
Unit bearing. Toyota should have known better.

Just putting a bump out there for this question. I noticed the same low humming noise about two weeks ago. Only there when in motion (even when in Neutral). Need to have it checked out soon. Any ideas for cost?

For me the cost (at a Toyota dealership) was $735.00 parts and labor, plus tax on the parts. Can't seem to get anything fixed on the truck for under eight bills anymore. :jaw drop:

I think my wife's truck might have same issue, low speeds the noise is annoying I need to try and figure out which ones are bad (any help?) anybody know the cheapest place to buy them and is there a post showing pics of changing them out? Thanks in advance!!!:shrug::shrug::shrug::shrug::shrug:

Went on a highway trip last week in my 98 4Runner Limited (202,500 miles). Got about 100 miles into it and the right front started to hooowwwlll so bad it drowned out the stereo. Slowed down to 50mph and it went in and out intermittenly. Strangly (I've read the other posts), the roaring got worse on mild right hand turns (with the load partially taken off the right front). I limped in to the nearest repair facility and told them I suspected the right front wheel bearing. Upon further diagnosis, the bearing was replaced to the tune of $440...ooouuuccchh. Drove back to town with no further problems....until....I took it back out a few days later, drove on a clover leaf (right turn) and the roaring/grinding sound came back for a few split seconds, off and on until I completed the turn. What could it possibly be???? Is there some shims that need to be behind the bearing???? WTF?!
