Lower ball joint nut

Should the lower ball joint nut only be finger tight after cotter key removal? Guess maybe I should count my blessings or is this normal? Anyway, power steering rack bushings installed already , lower ball joints and outer tie rods in the works.

No, it should have be torqued to 105ft/lbs and if the holes don't align for the key, tightened further until they do.

I think he was afraid his ball joints were going to fail due to being loose. Although I think the cotter pin pretty much eliminates the possibility of the nut backing itself off though.

If not tq'ed correctly the nut and threaded portion can sheer off. Both from under or over tq.

Well, new oem ball joints are now installed. Properly torqued. Good for another 200k ( ok maybe 100k ).
