Lower Fins

Looking at the lower fins (circled in picture) I always get angry that they turn Gray from UV fading. I try plastic black restore, but when highway driving in the rain, 70 mph water blasting strips any black restore off it. Has anyone taken the fins off and went over them with black Krylon Fusion or something? Did it work out alright? Is there anything anyone can think of I should look out for before going ahead? Thanks

Never use armor-all, restore, or anything else on your plastic trim. It's like crack. Once you start, you have to keep using. I've found that the majority of the time, the more you use it, the worse it gets. I don't use anything on my 2007, and it's still black.

I heard that the dash was that way, but didn't know all the plastic trim acted this way. Although it is now greyer than before, I started using the restore because the Florida sun is BRUTAL on everything. That's why I was thinking of using some Krylon. No matter the reason, my black is now gray, and I guess it will take some experimenting to find out what works.

Have you tried 303 Aerospace Protectant?? Many say this stuff is very good. Available online or sporting goods store.

I agree on the Armor All...........don't go near it

Stay away from anything that is silicone or petrol based; it will make it look shiny for awhile, but like the other poster mentioned you can't stop using it. It's harmful and nasty. Instead look for a water based dressing for tires and trim. Hyper-Dressing from Meguiar's is an excellent choice as you can reduce it with water to get the desired sheen level you like. Straight from the bottle is super shiny, cut it x4 for a nice matte finish. Poor Boys World makes Bold & Bright another great choice. Either one, just spray it on and let it dry. You might follow up with an applicator of some kind to wipe up if you get it too heavy. These too will need re-application after a few washes or 70 mph driving rain.

303 Areospace Protectant is great stuff although I don't use it on plastic trim as it tends to streak. It will turn it back to a nice black though, but I reserve my 303 for rubber seals around the doors, windows and trunk seals. Keeps them from drying out and cracking. Good for mud flaps too if you have them.

why don't you just take it off and hit it with some rustoleum plastic spray. Like you stated the krylon is your best option. It will last the longest, cost the least and it's very simple to do.

For a follow up, I tried the 303 because I figured if that worked, there would be no reason for painting. 2 months later and 11K miles in 120 degree heat, rain, and a bit of snow, the 303 is working great. The fins are still black after 1 application. Thanks for everyone's ideas
