If you are truly off-road and your LR3 dies, how would you get it back to a road where a tow truck could take it away? I know my 4Runner will start, run and truly take me anywhere I want to go w/o having to worry about when it will die.
Part of offroading is feeling confident your rig will get you there and back. If LR's are being towed out of driveway's, what do you think your experience would be if you were 20 miles offroad at Moab, or some other desolate location and the LR decided to crap out?
Absolutely no comparison in my mind. LR is strictly an urban vehicle as it needs a dealer close by.

I see your point, but I think that's overhyped a bit. I mean, I'm sure for every nightmare story you hear about the LR3's reliability, you will get maybe 4-6 owners that are happy. All I know is, the truck is beautiful, is a beast off road, much better departure and approach angles than my 4runner, etc. Is it worth the extra 200+ a month? Probably not.

The LR3 crushes the 4runner off-road, but is clearly less dependable. As far as breaking down on the trail, the LR3 isn't and won't be the last car to do so. You just have to be prepared. Classic 4runners that are made in to trail rigs don't quite have the dependapility of the new ones either.

I love the LR3. It looks great, it has an excellent 4wd system, and it is a classy vehicle. Unfortunately, it\'s about as reliable as a 20-year-old Chevy.
A good friend of mine has had a LR3 for two years now, and I cant even begin to tell you how many times he had to bring it in for service. If the reliability was there, I would surely be driving an LR3 instead of a 4Runner right now.
However, I am not blind to the fact that all vehicles have the potential to break down and leave me stranded, whether on the road or on the trails. Even Toyota reliability will not guarantee me that I will make it back to civilization without needing a tow truck. I think its funny that people have an invincible sense of security because they drive a Toyota. Sure, the odds are probably in our favor over a vehicle like a Land Rover, but that does not mean that we will never break down off road. And if you really stop and think about it, how much time do we spend off road? Even a hardcore offroader probably spends 95% of his time on the road, so the likelihood of breaking down off road is very low in either vehicle. But breaking down still sucks, and that is the main reason I chose a 4Runner over an LR3.
