Lsd?

So is it a limited slip or and open differential then? An open differential has no ability to spin the drivers side wheel, with or without resistance. Am I wrong? It sounds like a Torsen differential to me where it is a one wheel drive until it slips and then it distributes power to the other wheel.

My truck has the J-shifter T-case or watever its called. I have the shifter, not the button type like the Limiteds have.

As Nelsonmd said, if you don't have a locking differential, it is open.

So when you pull the 4wd lever you have one wheel powered in the front and one in the back (in extreme circumstances, ie being really stuck). The newer 3rd gens have an ATRAC system which manipulates the brakes to try and give the other wheel power.

To be fair, your "presentation" on tranny coolers failed to take into consideration several factors, it was far from conclusive like you tried to portray it.

An open diff allows the power to go to the wheel less traction. If one wheel has traction and the other is spinning, applying the brake to the wheel that is spinning sends the power to the wheel that has traction.

This is called a poor man's locker. When one wheel is in the air, any resistance on the lifted wheel is transferred through the diff as force on the other wheel. So when you have a wheel lifted, lightly applying the brakes causes resistance n the lifted wheel, which is transferred as power to the other wheel. You have additional resistance on the gripping wheel because of the brakes, but the engine can power through that is the brake are on lightly.

The atrac system and similar systems will actuate the brakes independently on each wheel to brake a wheel that is spinning freely, thus transferring power to the opposite wheel.

Read up on Dous' rig, Singtoe helped hi install a second parking brake lever so he could brake each o the rear wheels independently to take advantage of the "poor man's locker" principle.
 
Yes unfortunately "4 wheel drive" is misleading. The best you can get on a stock 3rd gen is 3 wheel drive. That is a locked rear diff and power going to the front open differential.

In most cases this is not very likely.

Correct. If you had both one of the rear wheels in the air, the one touching the ground would get no power. That is where the ATRAC system comes in. What that does is apply the break to the wheel that is spinning in the hopes that the wheel on the ground will get power.

Applying the brakes can and does help to a small degree. The flaw is that the brakes are also the wheels that you want to have traction too. If you could only apply the brakes to the wheels that are spinning, then the power would go the wheels that need the power.

Drcoffee, like the others are saying, an open diff is still connected on both sides and will give power to both wheels until one has more resistance. Then it can go from 50/50 to 100/0 and anything in between.

What I don't understand is why doesn't it come with a Torsen Diff.? These weren't cheap trucks to buy.

Well actually, the '99 and '00 Limiteds and all '01 and '02 4x4s came with a Torsen diff in the t-case (aka multimode, awd). 3rd gens up through '00 had the rear elocker option so I guess Toyota felt that was enough (and it is in 95% of situations I'd say). The '01s and '02s had the ATRAC and all that stuff instead of the elocker, which from a harder off roading standpoint, isn't as good. I'll take my lockers any day over LSDs for hard wheelin. IMO LSDs are best used for desert style baja trucks where they do a lot of fast cornering on loose dirt.

A lot of people on here do like Truetrac LSDs in the front of their 4runners. Some claim they are easier on the drivetrain than a locker, but I love my ARBs and they work great. Also keep in mind, an LSD will still allow one tire to spin and the other to stay put when one is lifted in the air. That's why I say lockers are better for harder off roading.
 
I guess I should be thankful I'm in the great flatlands of Illinois where speed bumps are our biggest challenge. LOL
