Lug Nut Issues

Good Morning,

One of the first things I did when I purchased my '17 TRD Off Road was order up a set of 17-inch TRD Pro rims (PTR20-35110-BK) to replace the stock ones. Today was supposed to be the big day for the swap, but I got a disappointing call from my mechanic. He indicated that the new rims will not "snug down" onto the rotor using the stock lug nuts. Apparently, there are two different size nuts, each with different depths. The stock ones are "short" and the needed ones are slightly longer. The long ones need to be ordered, and are going to cost something like $7 each... plus he can't get them for a couple of days.

It's too bad my mechanic didn't catch this in advance. He said he's now got to remove my tires and swap them back to the original rims since he needs the lift space. I sure hope I'm not going to get charged double labor!

Interesting. My buddy did the same swap on his 2016 trail and his stock lug nuts fit fine. Did they change the part number for the lug nut from 2016 to 2017? Or perhaps they changed the length of the wheel stud. Good luck with the fix.

Well, after one week I finally got my truck back with the TRD Pro rims installed. What a fiasco that was! It turns out that the stock nuts DO fit both rims without a problem. Toyota has two different nuts available, one for steel rims and one for alloy. It doesn’t matter what alloy wheel style you have, the nuts will fit! My mechanic apparently got confused by the torque specifications. When he put the first tire back on he overtorqued and broke some wheel bolts. At that point he assumed the nuts were not going to work, so he stopped. The story then gets murky, since he told me that he had to order alternate nuts from Toyota. First he said that his order got canceled at the warehouse since they were out of stock, then he turned around and said the did ship, but were the wrong kind. He must have then taken the time to look up the torque specifications (which he should have don in the first place) because all of a sudden they were fine. When I picked up my truck he said he didn’t charge me for the wheel bolts that he had broken. He also added that the stock wheel bolts are undersized and “must be defective”. He tried to blame the whole thing on Toyota instead of owning up to the fact that he’d made a mistake.

My wife asked if I was mad about the whole thing, but I told her what good would that do. It’s not like I can get the week without my 4Runner back.
