Lug nuts - 13/16" vs 21mm...

I am curious what you guys are using for your lug nut sockets or if anyone else has noticed this.

I have high-end impact sockets (so I know they are correctly sized) and what I have found is the 13/16" socket fits better than the 21mm. Being the 4Runner is Japanese one would think it uses metric lug nuts not SAE.

The conversion is as follows. I cannot find anything in the manual or a search that discusses this:

I have tried multiple different 13/16 sockets and 21mm sockets and same thing- the 21mm is sloppy, the 13/16" is nice and snug.

I've used 13/16" on my Highlander with the same size lug nuts and it is a more snug fit. Unfortunately, there are just a few lugs that end up being annoying (maybe due to damage/being scratched up) so I ended up just getting a 21mm deep well socket for my torque wrench and what little play it has does not bother me. I think it's pretty common to be able to use standard and metric sizes on some bolts dimply due to the actual dimensions being so close and there always being some tolerances built in.

Yeah, it's seeming to me that that 0.3625 mm difference (between 13/16" and 20.6375 mm) does make a difference you can feel.

My really good deep well 13/16" impact fits like a glove. I mean OJ would have been convicted type fit (of course I did not put a latex glove over the lug nut first LOL).

I was looking at picking up a thin wall non-marring impact socket because my high-end 13/16" is too fat (just ever so slightly) with the wheel cap installed, but after popping the wheel cap off its a non-issue and the socket does not hit any part of the wheel - not even close.

So, I just saved some money.

Whatever works, I use a 15/16" every time on my TOY 640 filter wrench rather than a 24mm for the same reason.

The Jap cars are 21mm. 13/16 fits but is kind of tight. We ended up getting a Snapon non impact for these vehicles. Either works but you get tired of fooling with the 13/16 when your working with these a lot.

The 13/16s fits my '14 4Runner and '15 Tacoma perfectly. A little slop using the 21mm on those lugs.

My 10 yr. old Avalon uses 21mm - 13/16s too tight.

Last time I had Michelins installed on the Avalon a tire tech at Costco said the car had swollen lug nuts and needed to be replaced. Google it if you're not familiar with it.
After returning home I experimented and came to the conclusion he had used a 13/16s socket as my 21mm continues to fit that vehicle perfectly.

I bought a 12pt 21mm socket and I can't get it to fit any of my stock lug nuts. Maybe the 12pt socket is a no go?

I keep a 21mm with the plastic sleeve in the glove box, it fits my wheel lock and lugs where the 13/16 doesn't fit the wheel lock well

I use an electric impact so I like to use the tightest fit.....deep 13/16 works well in 12 pt.

I couldn't get a 12pt 21mm deep socket to fit on any of my factory lug nuts but it did fit the wheel lock key. I ordered a 6pt socket on amazon, I'll see how that goes.

I thought I was the only one doing this, 13/16 harbor freight deep impact socket and Pittsburgh 1/2" torque wrench (also from harbor freight) are standard equipment in my vehicle and 13/16 also fits my boat trailer tires:fish2:.

I carry a DeWalt 20v small frame impact in the truck and a 3/4 and 13/16 will do all my vehicles....and it maxes around 85 to 90 lbs so I don't over do it!

You’ve gotta be kiddin! I never heard of this, but after watching a couple videos it makes sense. I had ONE lug on my Tacoma that was like that and it drove me nuts. I always blamed the guys at Discount tire for throwing in an oddball lug nut.

I was told be the dealer yesterday they would not rotate my tires because the lugs nuts I had were not long enough to seat lower in the stud thus making it unsafe. I have TRD Pro wheels and I used these:

Apparently they are not to spec. I guess I have to look for a replacement.

Those have a cone seat (meant for steel wheels) and stud centric wheels. The TRD wheels are aluminum and require lug nuts with washers since the aluminum wheels are hub centric.

I didn't have any sockets bigger than 19 mm in metric, so I bought a set of 12 to 27 mm deep impact sockets (yeah Craftsman). In my 2016 4Runner SR5, bought in America, my 13/16 inch sockets fits better and is snugger than the brand new 21 mm. Apparently 20 mm socket is a rare breed. I'll be using the 13/16 inch socket.

13/16 inch socket wheel lugs have a long history in America. I conjecture, that perhaps 4Runners shipped to America are installed with 13/16 inch socket wheel lugs, but 4Runners shipped to other places are installed with 21 mm inch socket wheel lugs. Anybody know for sure?
