lumbar support 'crunching'

Update ...

Drove over 1,000km and not a single crack in the lumbar area. What I noticed however was the lumbar does not expand as much as it was before?

A bummer part is the reassembling is a bit unsatisfactory because the back cover was not totally smoothed out ... will take it back to service for adjustment (if not, get them to replace the back cover). Back cover will be replaced!

I went to Power Toyota Irvine and they're telling me that they can't replicate the problem so I cant have it fixed. I even provided them the TSB and everything (since they weren't aware of it). I then proceeded to calle Toyota care and they told me to go to another dealership to try and diagnose the problem otherwise, I can't get it fixed.

They tried giving me the same bs but tell them to completely expand the lumbar support. They probably didn't play around with it. Or go to another dealer.

So Cal, Glendale dealer said it is back ordered...

just talked to the dealer, my parts are in, taking 'er in Monday for this and going to have them check out the "clunking" from the driveshaft, and the headlights, both of which fit the descriptions in the TSBs.

Since everyone posts things about the lumbar issue, I am re-pasting this information for those of you who might find it useful in this thread from the other thread that I created. I apologize for the double post.

I took the 4R beast to get the lumbar issue fixed at New Holland Toyota in New Holland PA. I had also asked the service manager to look at the driver's side leather seat to see how ugly it looked with all the premature creasing (others have had this issue as well).

They kept the beast for 2 hours fixed the lumbar issue well (have not noticed any crunching since the fix).

The service manager also told me that she had looked at the seat as I had requested and that although she was not sure if it was normal wear and tear, the leather did look 'fatigued'. She has ordered a new leather seat covering for me and it will be put on under warranty

For those of you who live close to New Holland PA or are in the area, I highly recommend New Holland Toyota. I had worked with them when I was trying to buy the T4R and they were great (it did not pan out because they were unable to secure one in my timeline). For those of you looking to buy, I suggest working with Mr. Scott Bachmann from the sales dept. there.
For those of you looking to get your T4R or any other Toyota vehicle serviced there, I recommend working with Ms. Ashley Zong- she is great to work with!

Well I'm glad everyone is getting theirs replaced.... my dealer is not so friendly.

Although I am over the 36,000 miles (I drive a lot). They didn't even want to look at it. I showed them the TSB and they said "call Toyota".

Great, thanks for that.

Parts are $402 from the dealer (~$302 online). And it looks like it is the entire upper frame portion that gets replaced, so I might not be doing this one my self.

Is this Lumber Problem year specific? I have a 12 LE bought back in Feb and haven't had any problems with my lumbar support?

I got the same question. 2011 with 14000 km and no crunching. However I like the lumbar support is barely retracted and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Tallicon, I am having a hard time understanding your concern here. "I like the Lumbar support is barely retracted"......what? In any case, I do not think this lumbar problem TSB applies to your "problem".

To clarify, the lumbar support is almost flat with the seat so there wouldn't be as much force on it so it wouldn't crunch or break as fast.

Interesting story happened to my lumbar support. I decided to get it fixed and after showing the issue to Service Advisor in dealership and showing them US TSB they found Canadian TSB and ordered the part. When part came they said they need 5 hours to fix it. That was strange, but in process of replacing that thing their mechanic said that seat assembly is fine and they needed to replace motor and rails. So they send me home with not fixed lumbar and now I'm waiting for motor come in. I really don't get it, anybody else had motor and rails replaced instead of a seat asssembly as per TSB?

Likewise, I've tacked on about 2k and haven't heard anything yet. Went on a long trip ~1k round trip and didn't hear anything or have any problems after the fix. Dealer did a great job (Glendale).

Gone for me

Hi all.

Reviving an old thread, I know.... I have been tracking this thread since nearly the beginning, but my seat was not crunching, so I did not pay too much attention. Then, in early July I fell waterskiing (getting too old for that) and hurt my back (nothing serious). I cranked up the lumbar support, and got the dreaded 'crunch'.

The rest of our summer was crazy busy, and I changed jobs, and life took over. Also, my wife and I traded cars because with my new job the commute was longer, so driving the small car made sense. Anyway, the point is that I became a week-end only driver of the 4runner, and I lost track of the crunching issue. I happened to take the runner in for a routine service, and I mentioned the lumber crnch issue. Toyota was very concerned, the first time this dealership had heard of the problem (at least they claim that) and took the car for a test drive, pushed, prodded, and poked the sear, but claimed that nothing showed up. In disbelief I did the same, and, miraculously, there was nothing.

Now, wracking my brain, I could not actually recall the last time I felt it. I mentioned this thread, and we went through the TSB/ They found the Canadian version of the TSB, and, in an abundance of caution, they ordered in the new part.

When it arrived, they happen to have an apholsterer in (installing a 'bum warmer' in a reallo old corrolla.... Canada... eh!), and he inzipped the back of my seat. He claimed that he could see nothing wrong. Doing a side-by-side comparison of the new part with the installed frame, we could see no differences. I *very* carefully checked for anything that looked worn, or damaged. We moved the seat in evey conceivable way, and there was *nothing* I could identify as being a problem.

So, we decided not to disturb the seat, and just zipped it back up. Toyota was *very* gracious about it. I felt like an idiot, but they assured me there's no problem. They did not charge me for anything.

If I feel the system crunching again, I am to bring it to them immediately ;-)

So, I am another of the report-backs with "It's gone". I have seen the seat with the back off, I can't see any problem. It looks the same (identical) as the replacement seat-back that was ordered in.

All I can suggest is that the flexible plastic lumbar-support 'shield' that runs on some metal rails mayhave come unclipped, and it's now back where it belongs.

Anyway, just some more info for those who experience this problem.

for some reason it's crunching when it's warm outside. My crunching starts when it's +20C and up. Best felt when truck sits on a sunny parking lot in the summer. I took my truck to dealer in August, they could feel crunching and ordered part as per TSB, but then tech said that it's not TSB it's a motor. They ordered motor and I haven't heard from them since. But the same dealer replaced my headlights without a problem.

I am out of my 3/36 warranty and now that it is warming up outside my seat is crunching. I haven't called the dealer as I just found out about this TSB tonight. What are my chances of getting it fixed or am I going to be doing this out of pocket?

I pulled the back of the seat open tonight and what a crummy setup the lumbar system is. I'm really disappointed that I'm facing this issue at 49k miles.

Did you ever try getting this TSB done while out of warranty?
