Lumbar Support Motor Fix

At 35k miles my lumbar support quit working. I only found info on previous generation 4runners online, most of the storylines went about how the dealer wanted $500 when the motor just had to get manually unstuck. I wanted to take a peek on my own before getting it fixed under warranty, my cars somehow tend to return with new nicks and scratches from repair shops. So here is what I've learned plus some photos.
The lumbar assembly can be accessed by partially removing the back side of the driver's seat cover. Untuck the zipper ends at both bottom corners, run one of the zipper tabs up and around from one corner all the way to the other. Fast forward in time, in order to close the zipper; grab and pull downward the untucked end with one hand and pull the tab up with your other hand, pulling just on the tab alone won't be enough.
Although I bought the car brand new, the plastic protective film under the seat cover was already torn halfway thru along the perforated line.
The lumbar motor is on the left side. It did not make a sound when I operated the switch but quickly became hot to the touch so I figured the switch should be fine. To follow protocol I unhooked the blue connector from the motor to check voltage with a multimeter. The plug has one of those push-release tabs located on the far side, it was a real pain to hold the tiny tab down to free the plug from the socket. Voltage checked ok both ways so I plugged the wiring harness back in.
The motor/winch unit is affixed to the frame with a seemingly permanent rivet, I would love to know if there is a separate part number just for these or the whole lumbar assembly needs to be replaced if the motor fails.
I assumed the motor is turning the bowden winch thru a worm gear similar to older 4runners. I removed the two mounting bolts at the top of the motor (the rear one requires some patience), then asked my son to toggle the switch while I held the motor in place. After few clicks and slight wiggles things have snapped back in place and the motor was running like new. I can't recall which way but by pressing the switch we made the motor pull itself up against the housing before putting the two bolts back in place.
On the positive side, the lumbar support works again. On the negative side, it's still hard as frock.

This couldn't have come at a better time as I've been wanting to open 'er up and figure out if I can adjust the lumbar support to fit me better. I'm a tall guy and as you might have seen on here before, the lumbar is actually in quite a painful spot for taller folk. I find it is pushing more on my SI joints rather than the actual lumbar part of my back.
From having it open do you see a clear way to move the whole assembly up? I can't tell too well from the pictures the mounting method, but the instructions on how to open the cover will surely be helpful for me to see for myself. Thanks!

There is no easy way to move the lumbar assembly higher. The lumbar support plate is plastic with two flat spring steel bars embedded into its sides keeping it near flat by default. The bottom of the plate is fixed (possibly hinged), the top corners are riding on two vertical rails. When the motor pulls on the bowden the top of the plate is forced downward thus forming a 'belly'.
The easiest remedy for hardness would be to put and extra layer of foam between the lumbar plate and the seat cushion, now that I have seen the guts I am fairly encouraged to give it a shot.

One more thing, there is another bowden running from the bottom of the lumbar assembly up to the headrest. I bet it is part of the whiplash prevention system that snaps the headrest forward during accident, I would not mess with it...

But there's no way that's actuated by the lumbar motor? I agree I wouldn't go messing around with it but it's got to be a completely separate system

The bottom of the lumbar plate almost touches the whiplash system's actuator. I am just guessing that during accident the plate presses against the actuator, if you move the plate up somehow then the whiplash prevention may not be operational anymore. Another big question mark is what it takes to set off the actuator while fiddling around and if that happens can it be easily reset?

Thanks G X B ad Tlowe for the inspiration in this thread. I have a 2018 SR5 Premium and have been getting lumbar pain when driving it for an hour or more.
I unzipped the seat back based on your photos and pushed four 6mm thick foam sheets between the back of the seat foam and the thick spring wire that the lumbar support attaches to.
It makes a huge difference. It pushes the seat foam forward an inch flattening that concave part of the seat about 2/3rds up, which seems to be the problem if you're ~6ft tall.
So you sit with a straight back instead of being hunched over.
You can buy the foam I used from any craft store, its pretty firm and is the type usually for children's art projects.
