Made A Huge Improvement In Sound System

so by your theory, i can power my 1000rms sub with 22 gauge wire.
in regards to the factory wiring, have you ever seen a new vehicle with a brake light that dont work, i know people who have had to replace their whole electrical system.

...

Good talk.

First off, you can't use BMWs as an example; even the new ones still burn through tail lamp sockets like no tomorrow! Lets also neglect to mention Mercedes Benz's unfortunate tangle with "bio-degradable wiring" ... because, yeah... it was as bad as it sounds.

But the biggest issues with factory wiring are work hardening (i.e. door hinges where the wires are bent back and forth repeatedly) and damage due to overloading of the circuit (i.e. someone trying to suck too much juice off one circuit not designed for it, like say tapping it for constant power for auxiliary systems beyond the circuits designed parameters.) Other than that your secondary concern is going to be the degradation of the plastic sheathing on the wire, of which vehicles made within the last decade won't have many issues with the sheathing degrading as quickly as older plastics, you also have the issue of corrosion in connectors, but typically that only really applies if the corrosion devours the connector (where as surface oxidation/corrosion becomes more of a boundary layer unless that connector is unplugged and replugged constantly.)

But hey, don't mind me. :pop2:

I dont have any theories, you can do what you want with your 10000000 sub, we are talking about factory wiring not your sub.

To answer your question YES, thats a manufacture defect and covered under warranty. Like blackworks said, BMW are notorious for it. burning the sockets, but thats a design flaw and has since been addressed with awesome LED lights. most new cars i see with stuff that dont work @ 2miles on the ODO are fords. i get to see a variety of new cars since i am the electrical wiring vendor for Philadelphia Zipcar and Avis/Budget Group Philadelphia.

i know people who have had to replace their whole electrical system.

thats a huge job, in a modern car. I wonder if @blackworksinc ever saw a case like this at the dealership, i am sure he can attest if this is indeed a fact or a myth.

I upgrade whenever possible to eliminate the future problem. I have a degree in audio technology, i started my first job at a stereo shop when i was 12, i have 25 yrs experience. That said , im no expert either. You own a shop, thats great, but doesnt hold much merit to me( no offense). The times i didnt do my own install, i had to take the car back and show the installer where they didnt do things proper( insufficient gauge wire, improper amp grounding, etc), 9 out of 10 "professional installs" that ive seen are crap, using prefabbed enclosures, crap gear etc. Ive never met a person who was serious about their audio that used the factory speaker wire. Ask steve mead if he does. But in the end, this is just my personal experience and opinion. And we all know what thats worth. Good talk.

I dont know who steve mead is, so name dropping doesnt get me out of my seat.

Car audio was always a hobby for me. when i got stuff installed by other pro's, i never went in and questioned their work. that was all done before i even gave them my car.

Crap work and taking stuff back, thats on you. I try and make the right choice before leaving my car. maybe you should have steve mead do your install, lol.

Obviously your standards high. My installs would not fall into your 1 out of 10, unfortunatly i would be in the 90% according to your classification of crappy professional installs. I use prefab boxes, economically its faster, easier, less work, more profit and saves tons of time. I use factory wiring, i use it in my 4runner and all my cars i have done aftermarket installs in. in fact, rarely did i ever run new wiring into the car doors in the last 10 years. only time i remember doing it was last saturday april 12, 2014. it was a 2014 nissan altima that came from the factory with only front speakers. no speakers in the doors or rear deck. in fact no wiring into the doors or rear deck. so i ran from the headunit to the rear doors a 16 ga wire.

My personal experience is a daily occurrence with car audio, i dont have a degree in audio technology. i do have real world experience with audio technology if that means anything.

Well my friend, today is your lucky day...You have finally met someone that fits your criteria a: serious about car audio b:uses factory wiring c: uses prefab boxes d: installs crappy gear (by choice, in exchange for $$) e: doesnt know who steve jobs is LOL
:first:

at least i am good for something today....off to work, i have two 2013 rouges to install dvd headrests and remote starter, 2014 range rover sport dvd headrest system and a 2014 acura tl type s i need to get a cold air intake on with a bunch of led lighting mods, remote starter with the oem push to start, and install a type s body kit. btw i am going to do a crappy install on the intake since no one makes a intake for this 14 acura tl 3.5L type S, do a search you'll see.....i did it. :) thats just beginning of my day, and no audio technology degree too blah hahaha

Wow my thread turned into a pissing contest on whether you should change wiring or not. I did not change my factory wiring and highly doubt that I would be able to hear a difference in the sound had I done so.

I definitely hear major improvement by replacing the factory amp, and I expecit I will hear even more improvement when I replace the factory subwoofer. Not sure if I'm going to do the speaker or not, but even if I do I will not replace the wiring to the speakers. Not sure about wiring to the subwoofer though since I don't know the current gauge, nor do I know what sub I will be installing.

Fairly certain I would trust gshadow325 to do my installation and let him decide whether or not to replace wiring.

Jim, No...I am certainly not trying to turn this into a pissing contest! If I sound like that, my apologies to everyone! Its a discussion and thats all, amongst 4runner enthusiasts. we are all entitled to opinions.

I have real world experience and some have real world theories.

BTW Jim, thanks for the compliment, but you didnt see my last crappy install yet!

Something i dreamed up while i had the rear bumper off. put led's into the rear useless reflectors!!!

JimKW , what do you know about your yellow? vs, ss or tb?

I don't know what vs, ss or tb means?

I know my yellow Volvo is 2.3L 5 cyl turbo charged engine that has 222 HP. And that it is a very rare car. Probably less than 80 of them remaining in the US. I also know my wife says I need to sell it, but what does she know.

gshadow325 all in all , we all have our own opinions and ways we do things, i think it was a great talk, and maybe other guys can take what they want from both of us. I've seen some of the threads you've made , and you got some good ideas and write ups:thumb3:

Side note: no theories here, just 25 yrs real world experience as well.

OP My apologies as well for being all in your thread. Im glad your happy with your audio upgrades , im sure it sound much better than factory.:guitar3:

btw guys, if you are planning to run speaker wires thru the boot into the door...here are some pictures to show you what you are up against.

its tight its dirty its a PITA....lots of work for minimal gains IMHO

vs volvospeed
ss swedespeed
tb turbobricks

me on vs Ghost Shadow - Viewing Profile - Volvospeed Forums

My son is on vs quite a bit. I have id's on all three, but I am on Volvo Forums - Volvo Enthusiasts Forum - Powered by vBulletin much more often. I am a moderator there, but don't get on near as much as I used to. Pretty much get tired of answering the same questions over and over again. I'm JimKW on all the forums except Steelers forums, where I'm JimSteeler.

By the way I found the debate about whether to rewire or not very interesting. I just agreed with you more than ddnww, but I also see his point. I just don't think the return is worth the effort on rewiring. I'm sure there is a measurable difference with new wiring, but my ears don't pick up the difference. Been to way too many very loud rock concerts.

Not gonna lie, it is a long process, but personally, I like "exploring" all the nooks and crannies in my vehicles. When I first got it, I took the console and dash apart for fun :dizzy:
I am very impressed with the quality of Toyota's interior trim. Fits back perfect every time :thumb:

Good illustration of the boots. But it only takes 5 mins a door if you have a pin file and some tape. Just a little trick I figured out after doing a few installs on some friends vehicles. Easy, cheap and effective! Hopefully this tip helps someone out.

Hey what ever floats your boat. I have better things to do with my time lol. Like watch the grass grow :p

Personally I have found something akin to a Crocheting Needle works perfect for wiring harnesses.

What is a pin file?

I use a old metal antenna, tape wire on it and use some wd40 and it slides right thru.

pin file is just a very narrow, thin file. It was all I had laying around at the time and it worked haha.

Metal antenna is a good call too but didn't have one laying around...and as for crochet needle, I gave up crocheting years ago! ;)

+1 on the trim.. quality and solid..

After reading through this thread a bit, I'm thinking I might want to replace my amp. I have a 2005 4runner with the JBL system. Would replacing the amp and speaker wires be a significant improvement, or would I have to go as far as replacing the deck/speakers too?

Stock wires are fine.

Amp and speakers will make a huge difference, but you need to decide what you want to do, which speakers you want to keep, etc. For example, components in the front doors, lose the center channel speaker and surround speakers, run a sub for a nice 3 way setup... Or add rear doors etc.

A head unit will add some features and can make a huge impact to sq in terms of equalization, 4v+ preamp outs, etc. + add features such as Bluetooth and digital file playback.

I'm currently driving myself crazy with this right now so good luck.

My suggestion

Replace Sub and add an amp for sub 1st! Plus remove center - then decide what's next. I'm betting you'll no longer feel the need to replace JBL amp becuase it will make louder and cleaner sound once it is relieved of having to drive the JBL sub ... At that point a HU would add functions if needed and the ability of finer tuning (equalization).

.
