Maglight modification EZ as pizza pie

I have the long skinny Maglite and it slides tightly between the center console and the driver seat on the floor. I don't ever adjust my seat so there is not problem with the light there.
 
If I ever get Husky mats I am defintely going with that mod install. I really think the door is not durable enough for constant pulling of the mag light. But I do think if you can put it on the trunk door itself (the plastic area) because there is not a removable plastic door there.
 
Well, I was going to wait until I got around to installing one myself to be able to show pictures, but it looks like a lot of people are doing this. So, I wanted to throw out the idea to everyone about using heavy duty magnets on the other side of the plastic, so that you don't have to drill holes or leave mounting brackets sticking out when you remove the maglite. Plus, you wouldn't have to worry about ripping it off. Yes, it may get knocked off easier, but that is better then ripping off some of your interior. I haven't worked out all the details, but it seems like it could work somehow/somewhere.
 
Luxury that won't work. Not only is the weight and the movement of the car is an issue, if you have not used a set of these clips before you have no idea their hold on a mag light. I have a set on my workbench leg, and it has such a strong hold that you need to give a firm tug to yank it off.

Sorry, I thought I had seen magnets that are strong enough to overcome the weight/movement. I was thinking of magnet to maglite or magnet to magnet-mounted-on-maglite. Anyway, it was just an idea that I thought I would share just in case it helped someone before I got to refining/trying it.

I guess I should have started off by saying that I love what everyone else has done and I will definitely be trying one of them if this magnet idea does pan out to be a crazy idea.
 
The mag light is very easy to remove, all you have to do is slide it up, and when your done, slide it down. The lid has been quite durable, and since the majority of the flashinght CG is towards the base, I really don't see a stress problem causing the latches to bend.

On the other hand, I dont know what the husky mat is made out of. If its a rubber compound, I see more chances of it cracking than anything.

I will probably put a sticker next to the compartment showing the direction the flashlight should be taken out, that way I can avoid the inadvertant yanking of the unit.
 
Maybe for you. I see them ALL the time at Home Depot and my local hardware store. But stick with Home Depot for those local hardware stores are major rip-offs.

Firstoyz, To be honest I was more concerned about the flashlight jingling and rattlin' around but the brackets are pretty secure. I don't see a problem down the line, as long as the weight is concentrated towards the base.

I didn't even think of you sliding it out. Well yeah, if you do it in that manner then I see it working just fine. But the way I have to do it is because of the way I positioned it on my workbench leg, pulling it in the direction of the opening of the clips. If you were to do that on that door, there is not much clip holding that door close. I think after a good number of pulls, that door will fail to stay closed. But if you are sliding it like you said, then I doubt you will have any problems. So with that said, I might just do that.

What if you put a 1-foot 1x3 or 2x4 behind the plastic door? The screws would penetrate both the plastic and the wood creating a very stable base.

Thoughts?
 
Another great idea. I would go with the smaller wood for there is not much gap between that door, and everything in there.

nice looking installs, not to put down teh mighty mag light, but it is big, heavy, and kinda ugly. i tossed mine bout three years ago when my dad brought home a SureFire Light, I went out and bought a 6P for about $40.00 and will never go back to a Mag ever, the Little 6P has 10 times the usable light than my old 2d mag, plus is only bout 5"x1/2 in total size. Its so small my wife has one in the arm rest of the Miata.

To each is own Pieman. But I checked their website to see if they have a flashlight as small as the Mag Solitaire but as bright as a Surefire light has the reputation to be replace my existing Solitaire light on my keychain, and I do not see one. Did you see anything like this I may have missed?
 
nope nothing that small, and yes there are proud of their lights, but I can attest crap the lithium batteries alone are expensive, the surefires put out the britest/whitest light that I have ever seen, I would not trade the world for mine. Kinda like my Beretta 96, you might pay extra but if you need it it will be there.

looks great, mine's still hanging on beautifully. The bulb was swapped for an led one and I have only changed the battery once over the past 6 years. I've gone through 5-6 different smaller lights for fishing, but I know my maglight can back me up if I ever call for it.

Check out fenix lights. The Fenix e01. Much brighter than the solitair, same size, LED and better battery life.
