Magnafine Trans filter after 30K Miles

I just took off the MagnaFine filter from my transmission (After 30,640 miles) and opened it. (This is the older style plastic casing where you can unscrew the top). There was a very small amount of fine particles on the round magnet. I have no way to measure how much it was - if I had to guess - about 1/10th of a teaspoon.

I replaced with a new MagnaFine and the newer style is an enclosed metal canister type. It is not designed to be opened.

My transmission runs at a high of 210F-245F in the summer and around 140F-160F in the winter - depending on the style of driving. (This is due to the auxiliary transmission cooler I have) I run Mobil 1 Synthetic Transmission Fluid and the fluid looked brand new when it dripped out of the lines. I have bypassed the radiator entirely and it has been this way since 2007 (Almost 11 years now) with no issues whatsoever. I did not want to run the risk of the "pink milkshake" and that's why I only use the auxiliary cooler.

The magnetic filter is just an additional ounce of prevention and I was pleased there was not more of the fine metal dust on the magnet.

Personally I think 245 is Too high.

I would hit the same temps in stop/go driving in austin, got tired of it and went back to a new radiator (w/trans cooler hooked up again) and the external cooler.

Now I can tow 3500 pounds in stop/go and it'll stay under 190, SWEET! :cowboy:

I use the magna fine as well, extra piece of mind.

I think your temps are too high. I went with a new radiator and back in line because my winter temps were too cold.

Save your $$$ on Archoil, buy some Mobil 1 and then buy a new radiator and run it in line with the external cooler.

Anything over 200 isn't kosher for optimal transmission life IMHO.

Couldn't agree more. Heat is the #1 killer of automatic transmissions. 245 is too high. 230 is the point where I'm thinking of pulling over and letting my trans cool down a bit. Here's a link that gives some good info. Transmission Fluid Flush Tips | Aljets Automotive

Depending on what site you're on, you'll see different values. I remember reading that your ATF will last 30,000 miles if you hit 230 degrees.

I think you should either consider a bigger cooler, an accessory electric fan or going back to using the stock cooler and running your external cooler in-series with the stock cooler.
