Magnaflow Overland exhaust

Installed the new magnaflow overland car back exhaust today. If anyone is questioning whether to get it, it’s 100% worth it in my opinion. Install was super easy and build quality and fitment was excellent. I installed it with the j-tube and resonator (quietest option) It sounds great and might be my favorite mod I’ve done to the rig thus far. It’s amazing how the heimholtz resonator really quiets it down at highway speeds. Pics below.

As you can see the old aftermarket muffler that the previous owner installed was very tired lol.

So the real question is how loud is it with the resonator? Does it run any different vs stock performance wise?

At this point that's a hard question to answer since most 20 year old T4Rs are no longer truly 'stock'. Like MF states, the goal was to reduce the Drone in the RPM range it normally occurs 'stock' while having a 'moderate' exhaust note. I take that to mean a bit more throaty than 'stock'. I found it to be very civilized with the resonator installed. I read somewhere here that the designer of the system at MF is a 3rd Gen guy. Since the MF is a freer-flowing muffler than stock, I suppose there must be some small performance gain. I ended up not using the resonator, but then I also failed to 'Grow Up' all the way.....

Haha I took some videos from inside the cab before and after it’s a night and day difference in noise. But yeah the old muffler was super loud and had an awful rattle at idle because of all the broken metal inside lol. Get it man, it’s well with it IMO!

Not sure what it sounded/felt like stock because the previous owner had that muffler installed before I got it and had a mild tone too it but recently has been very bad because of the hole haha. I’ll keep this updated if mpg or anything increases I would assume there’s a marginal performance gain but I couldn’t tell much from my butt-dyno although I will say it seems to have a much smoother feel throughout the rpms though that could be placebo. I have videos from inside the cab before and after, is the best way just to put a link to a YouTube video on here or is there a better way to post it?

It's an engineered terminated device called a Helmholtz Resonator that is used by tuners across the auto industry. I'm sure there is some info on MFs site.

How’s it sound? It’s kind of a cool feature to be able to take it off and cap it or run the j-tube at any point if you ever wanted it louder/quieter for any reason.

It sounds kinda, uh, 'loud' just capped but it's all subjective. The most extreme would be uncapped. That's the cool thing about cat-back flange bolt-on - you're not stuck with whatever is welded on. The option to try different configs is one of the best things about the MF Overland kit IMO. Made in USA, too.

I've mentioned this before, but I put on the full resonator system on for long road trip so my wife and kids could hear one another speak. I was hasty with my clamp tension and threw a 420 CEL 'Catalytic Converter Failure' in about 300 miles which got me all bent out of shape and crawling around for a bit (CA smog check deadline was nearly upon me) but it was a downstream exhaust leak I created myself. Just tightened it up and cleared the code and passed smog and never had a CEL again. The fam won't be doing any more long road trips in my 3rd gen LOL (they're too tall), so I stay loud.

The T4R/SRQ group-buy savings and free shipping was nice, too!

i agree at first it was kinda loud, I even called magnaflow to see how i could get it to quiet up a bit, but after driving it around for about a month or so the sound dampens and now tolerable. the sound when taking off sounds sweet. Awesome quality, and i would recommend it, but kinda pricey.

I think most aftermarket mufflers mellow out a bit with use and these are no different. I've had mine since January. It sounds different to me at different times. I live in a city so the daily driving soundscape is ever-changing. A couple of times I've felt that it mellowed too much, but then I set off the occasional car alarm.....

Again, this is *without* the J-pipe resonator.

I thought I'd chime in with my experience. I have stock springs with Bilstein 4600 and the exhaust would bump into the rear axle housing on full compression. The exhaust is really made for at least a 1 in lift. The springs have less than 3000 miles on them, and there's no sag in the rear. I didn't want to buy new springs with a 1 in lift, or an oem exhaust, so I just removed the spare tire to give that additional half inch clearance. Added benefit is that I think the spare tire acted as a loudspeaker bc the exhaust has quieted down with its removal. I actually thought it was too loud and regretted my purchase, but it's more tolerable now. p.s. I couldn't use the spare tire anyway bc my tires are upsized one size so the spare no longer matches the rest of the tires. hope this helps someone.
