Magnuson Supercharger

Has anyone installed this succesfully own their own? I ask Because I do everything my self and my 2019 is getting supercharged, and I want to know the pitfalls I may face before I rip it down. :hat:

I did my own but I have a lot of tools, as well as electric and air tools along with experience installing multiple superchargers/turbo kits on past cars. You probably need all those types of tools plus specialty tools like crank pulley holder, and torque wrenches in every ratchet size etc. ratcheting flex head wrenches are a must as well. Its just a ton of taking bolts out and putting things together in tight spaces and torquing many many bolts to various specifications ranging from 30 in/lbs to 204 ft/lbs. you could probably do it with less, but it would be much more difficult without all the right tools. even then to take my time and be meticulous and clean along the way to make sure its an OEM-like install it took me about 22 hrs of work.

I've been debating about buying one but think I've passed for now. Its my daily driver and love it and not too concerned about power. I did just purchase the TRD pro intake with the sale though at $200 OTD. Pricing ranges from about $5300-6000 for the setup and then labor is questionable. Best labor price I found was 1k and thought it was reasonable.

Never messed with a roots style charger, only centrifugal chargers. Install should be straight forward. I wouldn’t over torque any mounting bolts. I believe those are self contained units, could be wrong. If it is a kit you should have the supporting fuel mods for it, FMU. Don’t for get to gap your plugs a little tighter, flame outs. Make sure your fuel pump can support with the hp it is going give.

I don’t know if you will a timing retard, like an MSD unit. Since most of your power is gonna be low - mid.

Just a little food for thought.

IF I dont do it, which is really hard for me to do. Id have toytec install it. I had a supercharged 80 series for instance and NOONE rebuilt thiers they sent it out. I vnever did one in my life and ended doing a howto vid. Thats just my nature PLUS every single time I had a serious yotaonly shop do any work on my 80 it failed and they bailed(well you too kit off road) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAgKwJuzj1A also thanks for insight guys.

With the installation manual that Magnuson provides, the install is pretty straight forward. It’s not that bad of an install, just take your time with it. After installing the blower, you will install the tune provided to you from Magnuson. It took me and a buddy of mine about 18 hours over 2 days. It’s really not that bad to install it yourself.

thanks for insight I have a lot of tools mentioned my only concern is not being able to "dial it" correctly.

If magnuson is sending a tune for you, to plug in, I’d roll with. It is most likely tuned conservatively, with if any timing pulled for your low/mid end and what your fuel ratio will be in boost. On your end, it will be making sure your plugs gapped properly. I would assume the install manual would tell you where your gaps need to be. The manual should tell you if you need to up your fuel pump or add addition fuel components.

If your in doubt about your fuel ratio, get an NGK or NTK wideband. You can get a muffler shop to weld in a new bung on the exhaust for like 40 bucks.

Just remember fuel, air, spark, timing. Not enough fuel it will sputter; not enough spark, you will get flame out ( like the truck is falling flat on its face). Air and timing, should be fine. Your getting additional air from the supercharger and timing is all in the ECU distributor less ignition, which a chip/tune will handle for optimal performance.

Tuning the ECU is probably more difficult than the mechanics of it. Does it come with the technology to to reflash the stock ECU. You'll want wideband a/f sensors also. Sweet!!

It does allow you to re flash the ECU but Im also looking hard at the pro charger setup which isnt as engine tear down intensive.

A Procharger would be nice. Do they make a kit for the 4runner? Also if your looking at self-contained units. Vortech V3 should be self contained. Not sure if any of the Paxton units are self contained, outside of the old school SN units.

Giving up the 80? Seen a few of your videos and enjoyed them. Actually I think I found it because of the spray liner I think.

Not so much "giving up" been 6-7 years coast to coast north to south 130K new oem engine etc etc etc shes still a beast even more so than when I got her. Just dont need to do the rubicon or steelbender etc anymore plus mileage not that the supercharged 4runner will do much better.

Yea Im doing it I got a CSF radiator to install while its out and a mishimoto t stat And I think Im good to go. Supercharger showed up in 2 days and Im gearing up. thanks for all the input fellas.

I would love to put forced induction on my high mileage 4 liter just to see how much it would put up with. Too bad a TRD kit is like 7 grand smh #giveboosttotheworkingman

If you're buying new from Magnuson or one of their suppliers everything you need to complete the install is in the 2 boxes.

I didn't really have the time to install myself so Toyota of Pekin, IL. did the install since they're a Magnuson dealer also.

1K labor and out the door, and a warranty to boot.

I'm assuming these kits are not for a 2022? I saw on the site it is only up to 2019. Is this just because there is no tuning available yet for the 2020+? I'd be interested in the Magnuson if it can be used on a 2022.

I emailed them about a 2022 SC and they said they are still trying to crack the code for the 20+. He seemed to think it wouldn't be long but who knows.
