Magnusson supercharger now out for ‘20/21 models

Well I hope Kevin @ Magnuson sales is wrong but here’s the email response I got back today stating there’s still no SC ready for 2020+ 4Runners

Anyone have one for long term? I'm concerned about reliability, but would love a lot more giddy up!

I’ve put just over 22k miles on mine in about 16 months. I’ve had zero issues with it. I’m getting about 17.5 mpg with 285’s on it. I realize 22k miles isn’t much but like I said I’ve had zero issues. I installed mine with 93k miles on the truck.

I had one on my 2015 TE. Installed it in 2019 w/ 86k miles on it. Absolutely loved it, sold it for an EV because I’m an idiot, and now i have a 21 TRD-P enroute… so this will be a definite add as soon as it becomes available. Powerband/shift points are all remapped, wouldn’t hunt for gears nearly as much, if ever. Basically felt the way it SHOULD HAVE from the factory. Minimal whine, only really made itself known if you really buried the throttle. Minimal impact on mpg if you behaved yourself, (unless you’re rocking a lift and a ton of bolt on’s then your mpg will go down accordingly.

Yes its expensive, but in my opinion worth it, especially if you’re living at any sort of elevation or just enjoy thrashing around burning fossil juice…

I assume a decrease in gas mileage is to be expected? Any ideas how much of a decrease?

Also, how does one get this installed? Do you have to take it somewhere special? No, I wouldn't attempt it myself.

Any added maintenance issues?

I would believe what the Magnusson website says before putting much faith into what a sales guy says about availability of the SC for the 2020+ 4Runners.

I’m so desperate for a power increase since I live at altitude, and don’t think I trust the reliability of a wrangler 392…… BUT, I’m also not crazy about spending this much on a 4Runner that will get a total refresh in 2023.

People in your area make do with MUCH slower vehicles. If you really need more power, I wouldn't waste my money SC'ing a 4Runner. You risk a lot of 4Runner's stellar reliability pushing more power. I'm not saying the power will blow up the motor or transmission, but you certainly introduce a number of potential gremlin/issues. I definitely wouldn't trust an SC'd Runner in a remote area like I would a stock drivetrain one.

If you must have more power, I'd be looking at something turbocharged. Turbos don't suffer remotely as bad at altitude as naturally aspirated or SC'd motor.

Wow. So the guy I spoke with was just super confused ….. ??
He was very clear in what he told me, and I felt like I was clear in what asked.

Crazy

Thanks. Yeah, I’m aware that forced induction is the superior option at altitude…… but I’ve read such great things about a SC 4Runner — especially via Magnusson — that I was holding out for this option.
I think the updated 4Runner for 2023 with the 2.5 turbo will be the superior power delivery system for where I live, and will be easier to quickly tune/mod as well

I'm getting the same mileage as my non-sc '13 Limited. The '19 has 265/60-20's also. And yes, the speedo is right on.

Magnuson has approved retailer/installers, so no need to do a self-install.

No maintenance issues. Just make sure the lower radiator hose has clearance from the idler pulley and check that the intercooler hose clamps at the reservoir are tight. They may weep but not leak or blow off. Hope this helps.

I think you are saying that it’ll blow up the motor.

Just tried calling Magnuson (805-642-8833, xt 2) and recd a voicemail that their sales team is all at SEMA in Vegas this week.

Hopefully we'll have more clarification next week after they're back in the office.

Are they adjusting their quotas this month for the absence? Companies usually have policies limiting the number of employees from the same team that travel at any one given time.

This could be indicative of the size of the company vs huge corporations or something else, but it wouldn’t pass muster in a Fortune 100.

Na. It's all the non-stock stuff added that can go potentially wrong. I'm not worried about the motor or transmission. The SC doesn't add a ton of power.

If you're a DIYer and know auto mechanics, you'd probably be fine. If you don't know how to work on a car, then I wouldn't venture too far into the trails with an SC'd 4Runner. Around town and on well traveled trails with lots of traffic, I wouldn't worry about.

If I had one, I'd definitely carry a SC belt and a stock belt (in case you need to bypass the SC), extra idler pullies, extra coolant line, some coolant and oil, a few extra hose clamps/zip ties/duct tape/electrical tape, a select few nuts and bolts that have a tendency to snap with idler pullies, and full set of tools (mostly sockets) to fix things in the field. With all that, you should probably be fine.

With that said, even with a stock 4runner, I'd take a stock belt, hose clamps/zip ties/duct tape/electrical tape, some coolant and oil, and set of tools, with me if I'm going deep into a trail or on a long highway trip.

Tuning 20-21 4runner

This would be VERY surprising if they were able to offer tuning support. Based on many hours of research, including conversations with VF, HPT, OVtune... among others there is really no way for them to flash the ECU until Toyota releases a service bulletin calling for an ECU re-flash. To my knowledge that does not exist yet, if they are able to tune, I would be very excited... I have a vested interest in tune support for the 20-21's. I have driven my 21 Pro 5 times.... it would be nice to have it back on the road.

Thanks for sharing. I'm pulling the trigger in two weeks. Good to hear zero issues. Did you buy chance upgrade rotors and pads?

Rotors and pads? Brakes? No, everything else is stock, 'cept for tires. Very happy with performance over stock.
