maint light is coming on. helppp

I have an 08 4runner and the maintenance light came on today. Only have 4700 miles on it. i'll set you up with some factors that may have caused something but let me know.

First of all I am due for my first oil change at 5K. Does the maintenance light normally come on when it is due for one.

Second is that I have been driving all over this weekend, a first time in the mountains. We were late for a cycling race and i was flooring it around the mountains. Could that possibly have triggered something.

Third is that it went through its first snow today when we were off the mountains.

I noticed it after the mountains but before the snow so I guess i can take out that last thing. But it only comes on for about 5 seconds when i start up the car and then shuts off. Anything you guys or girls can think of, let me know.

it's the oil change indicator; mine is blinking at start up right now too. I forget how to manually turn it off; it's something like holding down the reset button on the trip odometer button while you do something. I'll do a search and see what it is for you...and I for that matter.

try one of the following:

Turn ignition key to 'ON' and press the odometer button until the display reads actual mileage... not Trip A or B.

Turn ignition key to OFF.

Hold in the same button you used in step 1.

While holding the button in, turn ignition key to 'ON'.

The 'Maint Reqd' light should blink and go out.

or

1) Before you start your engine, press (and keep pressed) the Odometer button (not the trip button) on your dashboard.

2) Insert your key into the ignition and start the engine. In 2-3 seconds, the MAINT light will flash several times and disappear.

Yeah it is the oil change light - based on milage. Now we'll BOTH know to reset it at the next oil change. Same thing happened to me after an oil change but without the reset.

yeah internet is faster. I read the entire thing when i first bought the truck. But thats why you guys are here for. There have been dumber questions asked on this forum. :biggrin2:

Mine went off right around 4,700 miles after I bought it. I put the odometer setting on, truned off the car and then hit reset button and turned the key to on. Worked like a charm.

I know on the BMW you have to have a special BMW tool to change it back. I guess they don't want you to change the oil yourself.

I know for a transmission fluid...they don't even sell it to you over the counter.

They want to charge you $500...they have some sort of German BS!! Mineral oil.

Yeah that is because BMW charges $95 per oil change. It is synthetic and they claim it to last 15,000 miles before needing a change but still. They have overcharged us on my BMW 325 ever since we bought it. 250 dollars to fix the window button that got stuck.
