On a 2004 V6 4 runner typically what would cause Maint to light up on the instrument panel ? I know it could be several things but what should I check first ?

Thanks , Jack

Well I changed the oil less than 3000 miles ago , would it show that it needs it already ? What are a few other things it could be .

I don't know about you but I find my manual sometimes confusing and not really to the point . That's why I ask those that have had more experience that me .

Thanks , Jack

My mech sets mine for 5k on oil change could be cabin filter mostly service items , take it back to your mech. & ask him to reset it or I think you can take it to stealership for reset ,unless you change oil yourself . Let me go look at manual and see if it says what to do

You need to reset it to make the light go out. In my 03 manual it is called "engine oil replacement reminder light". It is hard to find in the manual. It is on page 120 on my 03. I do not know if 04 would be the same page or not.

Ok 2 things light definitely means oil change ! Apparently when you had oil done either they didn't reset & now its showing you need one ? In my 05 manual its on pg 151 "engine oil replacement light " it tell you how to reset your self , sounds easy enough & if not get one of your grandkids to help out !!

Oljedi- I noticed you been on a roll lately. LOL. Get one of your grandkids to help out. LOL.

Wait, wait, next jab at me. :hello:

It's all good there, I tend to go on a roll like you have been. I just have to get a feel of people first. Just don't like to see anyone get all bent over a little humor.

?- I noticed your picture, is that what happens being in the desert too long.

Here, I'll post a stupid ? so you can have a run at me also, besides been trying to search for an answer to no avail. And I have notice NJ has some color issues with are rigs at times.

Thanks Guys , got it reset and didn't even have to ask one of the grand kids for help . However , I do hate idiot lights and warnings indicators . Wish I had a full set of gages including a trans temp gage when towing .

Good to hear , yes idiot lights just seem to piss us off & not really tell us what's going on . Forcing us to dealerships !!

If you havent figured it out yet, the Maint indicator is truly an 'idiot' light. Simply put, it is a mileage counter. On my '03, it starts warning at 5k (from last reset) that 'Maintenance' due is coming up, and as I recall at 7.5k it becomes more insistant (since on my '03, the recommended factory oil change interval is 7.5k). It has no basis on actual oil condition, only on miles since last reset. The theory is that when the dealership changes your oil, they are supposed to reset the Maint counter, so you get a visual reminder when it is due again. so, if you have the oil changed at 3k, and don't get the counter reset, in 2k, it will start reminding you to do it again. If you have the oil changed at an aftermarket shop, they might not know about the reset proceedure. But the proceedure to reset it is in the owners manual, so if you do your own service, you can reset it yourself.
