Hey guys, I got a Quicksand TRD Pro 2 months ago in South Carolina, love it so far. However I live in PA and with all the salt and stones on the roads the rear fenders are chipping badly. I put Falken Wildpeak AT tires on it, 265 width, no running boards and the factory flaps. Today I noticed the chipping is now hitting the bottom of the rear doors too which is a major concern. A good 6in up from the bottom too. The tires are really throwing the stones. I dont want to get running boards. Has anyone else experienced this? Its going to require paint work at this point, on the plastic fenders wasnt a big deal, but now on the doors is a big deal. Maybe bigger front mud flaps??? Thanks in advance.

If you plan on using your truck off road just get used to it. I have a 2016 Trail and my fenders are wrecked. I also have plenty of chips down low and on the tailgate from rocks flying, along with some nice pinstriping. It doesn’t help that the paint on these trucks scratches when you just look at it wrong. I just consider it all part of the deal when you actually use the truck.

We are lucky compared to the Camry. Wife drives a 15XSE and the paint is horrible. Toyota already repainted entire front section and fenders.............under warranty.

I've done this on other vehicles. It won't reverse the damage but it will keep it from getting worse.

This is exactly why you do this type of prevention right at purchase but I see many people complain at cost.... only to complain later on at chips and other damage. It's not perfect but I have zero chips on my front bumper and fenders/hood at 13k...
I use Xpel but no doubt that anything helps when it comes to the paint being protected.

when in 2016 I did the purchase I installed running boards and replaced the front mud flaps with wider and longer fiber re enforced material .. I did this also on my GM truck when new april 2000 ..no chips on my vehicles ..
used the toyota mud flaps to make a pattern using card board .. placed on the vehicle had to make some hole adjustments not much then used the pattern to drill holes into the bigger mud flaps .. these will take a beating .. I still have the 2000 mud flaps very strong toyota mud flaps toy plastic not good in the cold snowy north east,,,,,,,,,,,,,.. probably good in so cali... lol..

I would recommend the clear film as others have said too.
On top of that I would add rock sliders with the top plate and bump out. One of the hidden features I noticed with the rock sliders is they will prevent a lot of rock chipping but the biggest is in the winter they keep the snow and salt off the body better than running boards. Since they sit much tighter to the body versus a lower hanging running boards they also accumulate significantly less snow on top from the front tire that then turns to ice and makes for an icy step. They’ll also prevent most door dents.

This is what I did, I even put a strip on that exposed area between the plastics where my pup jump in the trunk/where i sit with rear zips on my shorts.
Its kinda hard to keep them pristine but I'm trying my best. Pinstripes just require a good old polishing pad/compound and it will look as good as new - plus buying a white truck helps x10

What are all the key area's to protect? We just picked up a 5th gen brand new and I am going to take it in to get the front end, fenders, mirrors, and part hood covered in PPF. May as well protect some of the other areas as well.

ONe good trick I've learned is that some of these good new synthetic spray and wipe waxes have extremely low friction substances. so if you spray them over dirt/dust, you can wipe it away and it doesn't abrase the paint the way fingernails or cloth wood without it.
So, go wash the car, wax it with some synth stuff, and then put some film in the high wear areas!

I could be wrong, but I do believe you will want to remove all oils, waxes and other surface contaminants before applying the film so that it does stick for a very long time.

I took delivery of my 2018 TRD off road last night and noticed my rockers and the lower portion (6-8 inches) of the rear over-fender had protective film applied. I know the dealer didn't do it because is was dropped off the shipping truck yesterday as well. So, it was either done at the factory or port install.

i made this mistake of trying the factory color pen after someone said it was good. it's not, use Dr. Color Chip, it is much much better than the factory pen.
My 17 had this as a port installed option.

Being in KC, I assume your 17 landed in the port of Portland, OR like mine. I wonder if the FL and NJ ports don't do protective film? Or if it's a batch to batch thing?
