Major chipping issue

Mine has the lower door PPF on it as well. For sure OEM/port installed. Bought it in Montana. I assumed all 4runners had it. Mine is a Trail edition. Not sure if that matters or not to what models get it. I rely mostly on the sliders for door/fender protection from rocks. I'm still probably going to add some front mud flaps since I had to remove mine to fit larger tires. Just to give some extra protection.

FWIW the lower door panels on mine also have a layer of something underneath the paint that is not on the upper parts of the body panels. I'll try to get a good pic of it. It's visually different and looks like something along the lines of thin bed liner under the paint. Only along the lower rocker area and bottom of the doors.

Being in KC, I assume your 17 landed in the port of Portland, OR like mine. I wonder if the FL and NJ ports don't do protective film? Or if it's a batch to batch thing?

I actually got mine in Arkansas as it was a better deal and a couple hours from our lake house.

It had every port installed option possible

I'm thinking of doing this kind of wrap on a new 2018 4Runner, but worry about the long term durability of the film. We have all seen window tints that bubble and pucker after a while. How do we know that this film won't do something similar, especially in summer heat and engine heat? What's been your experience with it over time?

Good quality film lasts a long time. Cheap film doesn't. I used 3M film both times, but there are other good brands as well. I did my front end the first weekend I owned it. Replaced it all after about 2 years due accident. No issues, but wanted it all to be the same - so did it all again. I expect it to last for 10 years without discoloration or bubbles.

Would you recommend a wrap on the leading edge of the hood vs. the black plastic stone guard that Toyota sells that wraps around the front of the hood? (I have one of those stone guards on my older 4Runner, and it works well.) Seems like the stone guard might be better at preventing dings from geology flying off wheels of other vehicles.

For the vehicle sides, I'm worried about those "Utah pinstripes", and a good clear wrap there would be just the ticket.

Would you mind adding a link for your preferred 3M film? I have been googling, but I see quite a few. I am picking up my Runner in 10 days, and wanted to get some items ahead of time. Thanks for any help! I have never had a car I cared about enough to make any changes to. The pool of knowledge on this forum is so vast, I have spent weeks perusing all the builds and mods.

Another decent/good brand that i went with is Xpel. I did the front bumper, hood and the side rocker panel on our Limited.

Thank you all for the replies. I have definitely considered 3M clear protection over running boards and different mud flaps. The clear tape protection from the factory is good, and in the right spots, however the more aggressive tires throw rocks over those spots. Keep in mind it has got worse and its even starting to hit the door and there is clear tape on the door too, factory. Ill add more pictures.
