Making 285/75s fit on a 3rd Gen

Looking at a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws in 285/75 16 for my next tire

Assuming a 3" suspension lift (5100s/Billies up front 3" coils out back) do I need a body lift to fit 285s?

Also, for overlanding and occasional wheeling, but 90% freeway driving, is this a good tire?

I dont think you need a BL. Alot of members run 285s without it and from what i heard the at3s are pretty good on/offroad. Some guys i know are happy with theirs

You will need 3" of lift
You will need to take off your wheel well splash guard, beat the pinch weld with a BFH
You will need to trim parts of the splash guard
You will need to possibly use a heat gun to mold the splash guard where it needs to sit

If you're running OEM Wheels/OEM backspacing with those 285's, you'll likely need wheel spacers in the front to clear the UCAs.

That's how mine was.
Previous owner did the following to make the 285's fit:
  • OME springs giving a 2.5" to 3" of lift
  • Removed Running Boards
  • Trimmed splash guard/valance
  • Hammered Pinch Welds
  • 1.25" All Pro Hubcentric Spacers.

I have no Body Lift on mine.

I didn’t have to do any of this except for the lift. I run 285/75 Toyo A/Ts. My hub to center measurement on the front is 23.25”.

Before I put on my bumper, I had to trim the inside edge of the stock fender flare that was part of the bumper right in front of the tire. Don’t have a pic on my phone but can get you one if you’d like.

Hope that helps!

OJ, this is my setup, has been since 2009.
1. Cooper STT's 285/75 16
2. Wheels 4.5" backspace 0 offset, allows tire to clear UCA.
3. I have a Limited, removed bumper ltd flair trim piece, trimmed valance a wee bit.
4. Tundra spring & 5100 set on second perch 2.5" lift, rear LC 8 wrap springs.
Has never rubbed anywhere, I removed running boards like we all do.
If your running OE rims disreguard this, thats a whole different can of worms.

I did my research before buying wheels, the trick is the backspace and offset.
If I'm not mistaking Faulkens are made by Cooper, Cooper's are very good tires that will last.
Faulken AT3's tread resembles that of the Cooper AT3's. I installed Cooper AT3's on my 01 in March, only have approx 4k miles
on them. Highway manners are very good, very quiet tire. As any AT not good in mud, Sand they do well, rock surfaces well also.
I air down to 23-25# range offroad.

Stock UCA's will most likely rub with stock wheels.

You do not have to hammer the pinch weld if you run stock UCA's because they keep the tire away from the firewall.

If you go aftermarket UCA's you will need to hammer the pinchweld or run SPC's tuned so they keep tire away from pinchweld.

Trimming of front bumper valence may be needed.

This may be true. Since I’m running the 16x8 FZJ80 wheels they do sit wider so it wasn’t an issue for me. I can fit my whole hand between the tire and the UCA with my setup.

That is correct, the FZJ80 wheels are right at the 4.5" BS & 0 offset. They were on my want list, couldn't find them at the time.

The best way to truly clear tires at full compression and full lock turning is to remove the strut, reinstall the wheel, and then jack the lower control arm until you are sitting against the bumpstop. This goes back to the often brought up fact that suspension lifts don't actually give you any more true tire clearance. Yes, you will rub less frequently with a higher static ride height from a lift. However, full compression is still full compression.

This is with LX450 wheels (8" wide 4.5" backspacing) with 1.25" wheel spacers. If you don't have wheel spacers, you probably will not have to trim the fender like I did.
