Making a Key Fob Without Having a Key Fob

Hey All,

I bought my 4runner without a key fob, dealer only had the valet key and the regular non-fob key. Sucks big time but I got a really good deal on the price of the car so I couldn't haggle on the key.

I didn't think purchasing the key separately would be so expensive, the dealer quoted me about $600 for the labor to program a new key since they can't just make a copy of an existing one.

Does anyone know if it's possible to order one online through a reputable vendor or does it have to be done at a second hand key shop? Most of the locksmiths I called around locally can't make it for such a new car (2012).

I'm located in the Portland metro area if anyone knows of anyone locally.

There are threads on keys and having them made you can search for. However, they all (as I remember) apply to the key fob and not the smart key system. People have been buying blanks and using the car's vin # and having them programmed. I think the Techstream system can do it; although some people have had a locksmith do it. All much cheaper than paying Toyota's BS price. Search for threads about lost keys and also people like you that didn't get all the keys with their purchase.

So here’s what I did. I got this key on amazon and saved a sheeeetload of money. Have a locksmith cut the key and reprogram or go to Toyota and have them program and try and work something out with them. I had the key cut at the lock smith and my local dealership programmed it for free for me. Hope this helps!

Can buy this key from ebay. I bought it and got a local hardware store to cut it for my 4runner. It's a bit rough to insert and release but it works.

Programming the key is doable, but it's a pain no matter what route you take.

This site has all the links you need to get the software and cable to reprogram the ebay key fob with your 4runner. Plus you can wipe out the previous key fobs since you really don't have them in your truck.

I reprogrammed first, like I said this is a big pain in the ass. Getting a key cut not so much and no point in getting it cut if you can't reprogram it.

Here's what i did. Super cheap and easy.

2 part process
First get techstream going
Techstream - My Experience

Second setup the keys.
Key Programming

The cable and software can be had all day for $33, cheaper if you get into the group buy going right now. I think the price is $17.50?

$15 for a key and $1 to cut it.

$50 max, $30'ish if you jump on the GB.

I think I have 5 keys for my T4R now....it works great!

Buy the key from Ebay (check the links above) and program it with Techstream.
The key cut I did it at Home Depot for free (they cannot do fobs for Limited model, but they cut regular keys for Trail or SR5)

Good luck and don't pay the dealer for such an easy task.
