Making sliders work on a Limited

So I cooked my XREAS. I overheated the dampeners, they faded bad, and started leaking. Knowing I was going to replace the suspension and I could get the hydraulic lines and components off the frame rail, I picked up some RCI skids during their last group buy. After a long wait I finally got my suspension and put it on and then started on the sliders. Obviously the Limited rocker panels don’t play well with sliders because of their size, the solutions ate buying OEM trail rockers, going with Shrockworks rockers, or seemingly the most common - removing the rocker panels. I didn’t want to spend a bunch on money on replacing the rocker panels so I opted to go with removing them.

To start I grabbed a wire brush and some sand paper. I cleaned up surface rust and scuffed the paint then recoated the frame where the sliders will sit and let it dry for 24 hours.

Yesterday I started on the slider install. I removed a rocker and bolted up a slider and starting checking it out. It looked horrible! You lose the front mud flaps, it looks unfinished and/or broken at the bottom of the fender, and most concerning, there is a big ass gap where the bottom of the door seals are fully exposed. My concern is winter driving, mud flap is gone and your spraying up ice and snow directly onto the seal through the gap between the body and the door.

I sat there drinking a staring at it for a while *****ing and moaning about it before I finally worked up the courage to go for broke. I put down tape, marked my lines, traced my sons sand box bucket to get a consistent even radius and started hacking away.

I kept removing and installing the rocker tweaking the fit little by little each time.

This was the end result.

Overall I’m pretty happy with it. I can keep my mudflaps, it doesn’t look like pieces are missing, the door seals aren’t any more exposed than normal, and it didn’t cost me a dime. As an added bonus if I need the extra clearance it takes about 5 minutes to remove what’s left of the rocker panels and the mud flaps and I don’t have to remove the sliders to do it, I can squeeze them out.

The worst part besides committing to cutting it up was trying to make a template and mirror the rocker cutout on the other side. I didn’t take pics because it looks the same but I got the passenger side done today.

I think it looks good too. I don't know if it would work or not but there is edging that is like 1/4" and it slips over a piece of metal or such. I don't know if they make any that would bend that radius or not. But if so a little silicone and that black edge protector would dress that lower edge up.

Not sure what it's called or where to get it but I've seen guys on YT that put it on cars where they have modified or cut things.

The edges look good from the pics but if they look a little jagged up close that would clean it up.

In the process of tearing into all that stuff. Did you happen to notice what sort of ordeal it would be for me to get at the chrome strip. I want to paint mine black and I would love to get it off if it's not a huge ordeal.

I think I might see it laying on the ground in one of your pictures but not sure what I'm looking at.

Limited rocker panel

Good work on the body panel. It looks good. I think I've seen a body piece for replacing that low rocker panel edge on one of the websites that sells rock sliders. It's made for adding rock sliders to Limited and early 5th gen SR5s. Look at some of the rock sliders to find the accessory part.

Another option is to sell your Limited and get a Trail Edition or an Off-Road model.

The edges actually came out surprising clean with the tool I used to cut it up. I hit the edges with a belt sander to further smooth them them out. It’s not quite OEM plastic mold perfect but it did come out good. Being so low it’s not really something you see without getting down there to really nitpick the detail.

I took the chrome strip off while I was working on it, it’s super super easy. On the back side it’s just like 6 blue clips that push up from bottom. It’s very straight forward once you have the rocker panel off.

That’s the shrockworks panels I was referring to. They get expensive quick when you factor in shipping and the fit and finishnis not worth it in my opinion. But there’s no way I’d get rid of a Limited for any other trim level.

You may consider trimming the ends a little more like I did mine. First time you really use your sliders to, well, slide(!) you will f up those rockers.

I was sweating bullets before I cut mine too. Feels good though right?!

Nice job.

Thanks.

I did consider trimming the front and rear ends for that exact reason. I went back and forth on it but choose not to for the following reason.

The first is being silver the alignment of the rocker trims to the bumpers is a lot more noticeable than on darker colored vehicles. I felt like cutting it the whole length goes back to looking like something is missing because of the color. Second is the mud flaps, I know ditching them and posting muddy pics is what get Instagram likes and whatnot but I’m perfectly ok with not spraying the side of my vehicle with mud and rocks, I will not willing give up my mud flaps and as with all things I want OEM quality fit and finish in as many ways as possible. Third was really considering my intended use of the sliders. The main purpose for getting them is to have a step that doesn’t reduce clearance now that it’s lifted. The secondary purpose is the kick out to push around trunk trunks and rocks to keep the side of the truck and tire away from damage. And finally I mentioned it above but I can spent a couple minutes and pull the panels if I know I’ll be doing something where I’ll need that extra clearance, but in all honesty I do not intend to rock crawl and drop the frame down onto obstacles. I do come across some bigger things from time to time but that’s not my intended use of this vehicle, it’s not a crawler.

Besides, I have this thing for when I really want to get silly.

He can always cut or trim more later, can’t add it back after though!

Nice work overall, I went with trail rockers which cost a few hundred bucks but worked great for me. Since I can’t cut straight...

Thanks to the OP for this post. Just cut the SR5 trim on my 2010 to fit a set of used Rago sliders (which still had issues with fitment, but much improved).

Consider pulling the entire rocker panel cover as it gets rid of the chrome strip as well. At this point a roughly 2 inch plate painted black and a small cap on the front section covers it all up well makes it look roughly OEM. You may need to buy universal mud covers for the fronts as the OEM wont fit after the removals. I got a cheap set off amazon and they have been on a few years with no issues.

Nice work. Always a little scary when ur about to cut some expense body panels!
